Introduction

I greet you all my friends in Steemkids community.Trust you had a great Sunday and a happy Eid celebration to the muslim faithfuls.Learning is one thing that every human love so much.Myself,I love to learn from others and through reading and so i love to see others learn from me too.Welcome to the 11th week of our lesson series for this season.

As someone who loves the growth of Steem and Steemit across the world.I am delighted to always contribute in any way that I can to make contents that can draw the attention of young people.I have come to understand that the best time to love and cherish learning is at a young age, if someone hates learning from a young age,it's difficult to develop interest in learning even at adult age.

So I want to imbibe the spirit of learning in our young people.More especially the interest to love mathematics is very important.Since we have a lot of young people here,it is important we use the opportunity to make them cherish mathematics as a subject.Such knowledge and awareness will go a long way to help them even in tertiary and other higher institutions of learning.

It is no longer news that most young people have phobia for mathematics-a situation which if allowed will haunt us in the future.This informed my decision to start this lesson series over 8 months ago.

Never forget that the main aim of this lesson series is to improve our mathematics solving skills,learn more about mathematics,foster engagement among participants and sharing of ideas.

PROBABILITY

Our topic for this week is probability-which is the likelihood or chances of an event happening.For example when we roll a fair die(ludo seed) once,we have numbers from 1 to 6.The chances of getting any of those numbers is a probability.Mathematically, probability is simply dividing the required outcome by the total outcome.👇

Probability=required outcome/total outcome

Salient Points in Probability

  • If an event must happen.The probability equals one(1).For example the probability of a secondary school child in Nigeria to offer mathematics is 1 because it must happen.

  • If an event will never happen.The probability is zero (0).For example the probability of having a girl as a registered student of Boys Technical College is zero(0) because it will never happen.

  • If the probability that an event will happen is 2/3.Then,for that event not to happen again is 1 - (2/3).

Practical Problems

Pls refer to this my video to see a visual solution to the first question.👇

1.)A student is picked at random from a class of 10 boys and 12 girls.What is the probability that the student is a boy.

Solution:

Total outcome=10+12=22
Number of boys(required outcome) =10
Probability=required outcome divided by total outcome.
Probability=10/22=5/11

2.)A fair die(ludo seed) is tossed once.What is the probability of getting a 5.

Solution:

Possible numbers that a fair die can show are 1,2,3,4,5,6.

So total outcome=6
required outcome =1(because 5 appeared once on the fair die).

Probability=required outcome divided by total outcome.

Probability=1/6

3.)In a class of 18 girls and 22 boys.A prefect is to be chosen.What is the probability that the prefect will be a boy.

Solution:

Total outcome=18+22=40
Number of boys(required outcome) =22
Probability=required outcome divided by total outcome.
Probability=22/40=11/20

4.) A bag contains 3 blue balls,2 black balls and 5 red balls.A ball was selected from the bag at random.What is the probability that it is red.

Solution:

Total outcome=3+2+5=10
Number of red balls(required outcome) =5
Probability=required outcome divided by total outcome.
Probability=5/10=1/2

Homework

1.)In an class.There are 5 boys and 7 girls.What is the probability of selecting a boy from this class.

2.)In a class of 100 students.30 love to read.If a student is picked at random from the class.Find the probability that the student hates reading.

3.)A fair die is tossed once.What is the probability of getting a score of 8.

4.)A farm has 7 black goats,10 white goats and 3 brown goats.If a goat is selected at random.What is the probability that the goat is NOT brown.
