Freedom is not just a feeling or privilege to do whatever you want, rather it masquerade of responsibility and accountability, I.e. the maturity to be responsible and take responsibility for your actions.
Therefore, it is as you have said, freedom is earned out of good behaviour and trust. It is only trust that can you freedom when you trust them being good enough to make the right decisions on their own. You are a good mother, don't let anything or anyone change that.
