What is blood genotypes

It is the various antigens and antibodies in the red blood cells. We have 6 major types of blood genotypes. They includes

O
AB
A
B

It is also classified into 8 classes which are

A+
A-
B-
B+
AB+
AB-
O+
O-
These are based on Rhesus factor.

Blood Compatibility
This is one of the major reasons why people die in our various hospitals. Before blood transfusion, it is very important to check for compatibility between the donor and the recipient.

A Blood group A+ can accept blood from A+, A-, O+ and O-. They can only donate blood to A+ and AB+.

A Blood group A- can only receive blood from blood groups A- and O-. They can only donate to A+, A-, AB+ and AB-.

A person with blood group B+ can only receive blood from blood groups B+, B-, O- and O+. They can only donate blood to B+ and AB+.

A person with blood group B- can only receive blood from B- and O. They can only donate to B-, B+, AB+ and AB-.

People with blood group AB+ are general recipient, this means that they can receive blood from everyone. They can only donate blood to AB+.

A person with blood group AB- can only receive blood from blood groups AB-, A-, B- and O-. They can only donate blood to AB- and AB+.

A person with blood group O+ can only receive blood from O- and O+. They can only donate blood to A+, B+, AB+ and O+.

People with blood group O- are known as the general donor. This means that they can donate blood to anybody, they can only receive blood from blood group O-. This particular blood group is very scare because it's used by everyone.
Tests like ABO typing and blood test kit are used to determine various blood types.

What is blood transfusion?
This is a medical process in which blood is given to recipient. This blood can be from free volunteers or from family members. These blood are stored in blood banks in hospitals.

Occasions when blood transfusion is needed

Anaemia

This is a medical condition in which there is shortage of blood in the human body.

Accident

In case of serious accident where victims lost a huge amount of blood, transfusion is also needed.

During childbirth

Blood transfusion is also needed when a woman lost a lot of blood during childbirth.

During surgery

Blood transfusion is also needed during surgery especially when a patient lose too much blood.

It is very important to check for blood Compatibility before transfusion in order to prevent agglutination and infected blood.

AGGLUTINATION Is the clumping of blood, which occurs when blood mix together with antibody which it's not compatible with. It leads to death.

Some of the reactions which occurs after transfusion includes.

Chills, fever, headache, rashes, back pains, shock e.t.c. The injection used to treat this reactions is called Hydrocortisone injection.
