What is a joined family system

A joined family also known as extended family, is a type of family system in which the extended family stays together in one house. The people in this family includes father, mother, children, uncles, aunties, cousins, nephews, niece, grandfather, grandmother e.t.c.

Unique features of Joined family system

Members stay under the same roof

One of the major characteristics of this type of family system is that the members stay in the same house.

Financial responsibility
The members of the family pool their resources together and shoulder the financial responsibility of the family.

Cooking together
People in this family usually cook together in one kitchen.

Division of labour
There is division of labour and work amongst members of the family.

Socialization agents
Older family members are the major socialization agents in the home.

Disadvantages of joined family system

Separate homes is better than joined family system with the following point of mine

Privacy
There is nothing like privacy in this type of family setting, you can't eat what you want to eat, or do things at your own free time. You have to do it when everyone is doing it.

Conflict
There is usually conflicts and loggerheads among family members. They usually fight for space, food, house, family land and so many other things.

Increased dependency
Some members of joined family system usually find it very hard to live alone and cater for themselves, due to over dependency on other family members.

Negative social behavior
Some children from these homes usually exhibit some negative social behavior due to constantly staying in a home where they fight and exchange words often.

Separate homes
This is the type of family system in which the father, mother and their children live separately in a house.

Unique features of separate homes

Small family circle
The family comprises of only the father, mother and children.

Family shared value
Members usually have unique values and goals.

Socialization agents
The parents are the major socializing agent in the family.

Financial responsibility
Parents takes care of the financial responsibility of the family.

Division of labour
Division of labour is usually among father, mother and their children.

Separate homes is better than joined family system in the following ways

Privacy
There is usually privacy in separate homes. You're free to do things at your own leisure time.

Less drama
There is no fight for space, food, house, money and other things.

Proper upbringing
Parents train their children well.

Independence
Members are usually motivated to work hard and be independent.

Peace
There is usually Peace and harmony in the home because there is no quarrels and conflicts.
