Good day ladies and gentlemen, I remain @professorlenz a humble steemian. Well, today I'll be talking about one of the most popular form of security in the world today, BIOMETRICS

Biometrics

Biometrics is simply the measurement and analysis of the unique Physical and behavioral characteristics of people.
This technology is mostly used for identification and security purposes.
The term Biometrics is derived from two Greek words, bio meaning life and metric meaning measure

How do Biometrics Work

Biometrics have been used increasingly in so many big offices today for security. This is due to the fact that with Biometrics, you don't have to cram passwords or whatever. You just have to authenticate one special part of your body be it iris, fingerprint, or whatever. With Biometrics, locks can be opened WITHOUT CONTACT.

Components of Biometric Devices

-A reader or scanning device to save the factor being authenticated
-Software that changes Biometric data into digital format
-Database to hold the data

Types Of Biometrics

-Physiological Identifiers: This has to do with the use of physical things such as fingerprints, finger geometry, iris, vein, retina, voice, DNA, etc.

-Behavioral Identifiers: This includes the unique ways an individual acts such as walking gait and other movements. These behavioral identifier is a new type of Biometrics hence the reliability is low for now. Nevertheless, in the next few years it could become one of the best If not the best.

Advantages of Biometrics

The advantages of Biometrics are too numerous, but just to mention a few.

  • Hard to fake or steal
  • Generally the same over the course of a user's life
  • Non transferrable
  • Efficient

Disadvantages of Biometrics

Just like every other thing, Biometrics also has its disadvantages

  • It is very costly to get the system up and running
  • Databases holding Biometric data can still be hacked
-Errors like false rejects and accepts can happen
-A user who uses fingerprint sensor may not be able to receive verification if he injures his hand.

Application of Biometrics

Biometrics has become part of our everyday life whether knowingly or unknowingly.

  • In Nigeria, things like NIN, Waec, and Jamb all make use of these Biometric machines for capturing

  • Law enforcement agents use Biometrics to capture criminals IDs

  • It is useful for healthcare as health insurance programs may require fingerprints for verification.

  • Airport Security: Most airports today use iris recognition Biometrics for security.

Conclusion

Humans have done a lot of things in order to ensure peace and security but just as we have seen, even after all the advantages of these technological products, there are still disadvantages. The best way for us to be truly secure is for everyone to abandon wicked ways of life and remember to do what is right at all times even when it seems like doing so would bring us nothing.
Peace, @professorlenz
