It is the dream of every child to be successful. At the same time, every parent want their child to succeed. However, success doesn't come by chance. It is as a result of hard work, patience, resilience, and most importantly, being smart.

In this post, I'll be talking about academic excellence. While I may not be a scholar myself, I've discovered some things that can be of help to the kids in this community. Parents can also learn a thing or two from here that they can teach their children.

Things That Determine How Successful You'll Be Academically

There's a saying that nothing happens without a reason. Indeed, it's true. No academically successful person became successful by chance. That person you call smart or scholar was not born that way. In fact, smartness is a skill. A skill that is imbibed in every one of us. Your level of smartness is determined by how well you hon that innate skill.

The following things determine how smart you'll be:

  • Mindset: Many people tell themselves they're not smart, that they're not food enough. You must realise that everyone is smart. The person you think is smarter than you does not have two heads.

In fact, I did a survey one time in my department. I realised that some people were doing better than me in terms of grades and I wanted to know why. After studying them for some time I realised they don't get better grades because they're smarter per say, but because they put in far more time to read their books than I do.

Having the mindset that YOU CAN DO IT TOO is important if you want to achieve academic excellence like your mates.

  • Friends: The people you surround yourself with also play a part in how smart you'll be. Like the book of proverbs said, those who walk with the wise will become wise but those who deal with stupid people will end up badly.

For this reason, it is important to surround yourself with smart people, people who will push you up, and not the other way round.

  • Discipline: Like I said before, people who get high grades actually study a lot. Your ability to know when to pick up your book and when to drop your phone determines how good you'll get.
Helpful Tips

  • Tell yourself you can do it

  • Discipline yourself. Know when to pick up your book and when to drop it.

  • Get an accountability partner, someone to always remind you to read.

  • Get a mentor: This is very important. You need somebody to guide you, someone that has gone through what you're going through.

  • Create a timetable for reading, and stick to it even when it's not yet time for exams.

  • Know what works for you. If you're a day reader, read during the day. If you're a night reader, read at night. Don't read when you don't like reading just because your friend likes reading at that time.

  • Ask Questions: It's important for you to ask questions so you have a direction.

Conclusion

I'll always tell people that it's not about how MUCH you read but how WELL you read. It might get tough but you must keep going. You will reap if you do not tire out.
