Defibrillators have saved many lives.

A defibrillator can restart the heart if it stops beating due to cardiac arrest, also known as sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

It can be a medical device like we see being used in movies, etc., or it can be a little device that is implanted into the body that gives the heart an electric current or charge to get it beating normally again.

Some interesting facts:

• The amount of time that passes before administering the initial shock is the most crucial element in deciding whether defibrillation will be effective.
• Defibrillators can be used on children, but a milder electric shock (usually between 50 and 75 joules) should be used; therefore, it is advised to use battery-operated devices and child electrode pads.
• There is no known major danger associated with defibrillation for either the mother or the fetus.
• In many countries, defibrillators are now available in a variety of public locations like offices, hotels, airports, malls, and more.
