Wednesday – I spy with my little eye – Mini contest (58)

in Steem Kids & Parents11 months ago

Hello SteemKids and Parents!

I know there are a few of you who could not wait for Wednesday to come to see, or, should I say, learn, what this week's word was.

Without any delay, let’s take a look at what the clues were:

1. It is a 14-letter word starting with "S"
2. It is not short
3. It can be a term
4. It can also be a person

And the correct word is "SESQUIPEDALIAN."

This is a word I’ve only heard once in my life, after taking part in a debate competition in high school. One of the judges told me afterwards that it was a "sesquipedalian" performance.
Do you think it was a difficult word to guess?

Nope, it was not. All the clues were applicable to the word, but one clue gave it completely away.

"It is not short"

If you had searched Google for what a long word is called, you would have found the following;

"Antidisestablishmentarianism" is a sesquipedalia: in fact it's the longest non-coined and nontechnical word in the English language."

Almost as long as the neck of a giraffe.

Some interesting facts from Merriam-Webster

  • The Latin prefix sesquiin means "one and a half time."
  • In the 17th century, English literary critics decided the word sesquipedalian could be very useful for lambasting writers using unnecessarily long words.
  • Meaning: having many syllables
  • given to or characterized by the use of long words

So, after all, it is true that often we miss what is right in front of us because we are looking for something more difficult.

And… for the third week there is no winner. This brings the prize for our next game to a "steeming" 8 STEEM.

Time for your next game!

The game is exactly like last week;

The game “I spy with my little eye” is sort of a detective game. The “spy” is the person who sees something, and the rest of the players must then guess what the spy is seeing.

Of importance, it must be something that you can see and not something you can feel, like an emotion.

BUT, “I spy with my little eye” is so much more than just a spy game;

  • It is a thinking game
  • It teaches you how to use your logic and reasoning and
  • It grows your vocabulary

The contest

For today, I am going to give you the letter with which the word starts plus 4 points, or “clues,” that you can take into consideration to figure out what the word can be.

Ready or not… let’s learn, play, and win!

I spy with my little eye something that begins with the letter “D"

1. It is a 13-letter word
2. For internal or external use
3. Sudden loss of function
4. Life saving

What is up for grabs?

The first correct answer will take home 8 STEEM this week.

The word and the winner will be announced next week on Wednesday; therefore, make sure you don't send in your answer later than Tuesday 23:59 UTC.

If there is no winner, the prize will carry over until there is one.

Until next week, keep guessing!

Thank you for taking part, but unfortunately someone else already guessed this word.
There will be a next week. (•ิ‿•ิ)

The word you're looking for is "defibrillator." It's a life-saving medical device used both internally and externally to restore normal heart rhythm, but it can sometimes suddenly lose its function.

The word is Dysfunctional.

Thank you for taking part.
Sorry for only answering now but with Steemit being down it was a bit difficult.
Unfortunately dysfunctional is not the right word. BUT, you can take part in this week's contest.
I hope to see you there!
