Wednesday – I spy with my little eye – Mini contest (27)

Hello kids and parents!

Yes, I know! I am late with this week's contest.

It's been a hectic week with us experiencing a heatwave, moving into our new home and, having no internet facility but luckily we are now up and running.

Lets look at last week's clues.

1. It is a 10-letter word starting with the letter "R"
2. It is a compound word
3. It is fast
4. It LOVES the sun

And the word is ... RACERUNNER!

I'm sure that by now you've all had a peep at the image.

Yip! A Racerunner, also known as a "whiptail", belongs to the lizard family.

They can run very fast. Some even reach 28 km per hour. No wonder they are called "Racerunners".

They love the sun therefore you will find them mostly in open spaces.

Racerunners are mainly brown or black with yellow stripes or spots and in some cases even both.

More interesting facts:

• When found in the dessert they will eat spiders and insects and in the forest, plants and even fruit
• They are very active and will look widely for food
• When they look for food they use their tongues to sample the chemicals in the air and then an organ similar to snakes to differentiate between prey and other objects
• What makes them interesting for biologists is that they don't have the normal two sets of chromosomes but three or even four sets

What I found most interesting is that they don't need a male to mate. The embryo develop and grow on its own without being fertilize by a sperm. It is called asexual reproduction or parthenogenesis.

And that brings us to the winner... unfortunately, we don't have a winner this week.

• It teaches you how to use your logic and reasoning and
• It grows your vocabulary
