My lesson today is targeted at children in preschool or even those who are yet to begin their school journey. It can also be helpful to parents who teach their children at home.

It’s jolly phonics letters sounds.

I am so glad that I have this knowledge because it has helped me a lot as a teacher in helping children master their sounds which is the building block or foundation for reading and learning the English language.

The first and earliest lessons that kids are taught in school in Literacy is letters and sounds. Recently, most schools start with the sounds (a-z) and progress to letters or capital letters (A-Z) after the children must have mastered the sounds. The objective is to achieve the art of reading as early as possible.

So, for my first lesson, I will be taking us through the twenty six letter sounds (The Jolly Phonics way).

Jolly phonics combines actions, activities and songs to achieve this objectives.

It’s quite easy and fun, all you need is to be a child as well (act like children, get to their own levels).

The letters of the twenty six English alphabet are;

a b c d e f g h i j

k l m n o p q r s t

u v w x y z

Now, in Jolly Phonics, these sounds are demonstrated differently to capture the children’s attention and drive home the lesson in them.

Below are the ways these sounds are demonstrated;

a: pretend like there are ants 🐜 on your arm and say a a a.

b: pretend like you are hitting a ball ⚽️ with a bat and say b b b.

Now, c and k are demonstrated the same way but they are different sounds and have different songs. So you pretend to click a castanets and say c c c.

d: pretend to hit a drum 🥁 and say d d d.

e: pretend like you’re breaking an egg 🥚 into a bowl and say e e e.

f: pretend to deflate an inflated balloon 🎈 and say f f f.

g: assume you hear water 🚿 gurgle down the drain and say g g g.

h: raise your palm towards your face and say h h h like you’re blowing air to your palm.

i: pretend like a cat removing ink from its whiskers and say i i i.

j: spread out your hands and wriggle them like jelly j j j.

l: stick out your index finger and pretend to lick lollipop 🍭 l l l.

m: put a palm on your tummy and rub it like you just ate a delicious meal 🥘 and say m m m m

n: put out your hands like a noisy Airplane ✈️ and go n n n.

o: pretend to switch on and off your socket and go o o o o.

p: stick out your index finger close to your mouth and act like it’s a birthday candle 🕯 and you’re puffing it off and go p p p. Make sure the air is touching your finger.

qu: the letter u comes to q to this sound. Put your palms above the other and make a quacking sound like a duck 🦆 qu qu qu

r: pretend like you’re a puppy 🐶 ripping off a rag and go r r r. 😃😃

s: wriggle your hand like a snake 🐍 moving through the grass and go s s s.

t: look from side to side like you’re watching a tennis 🎾 game and go t t t t.

u: pretend like you’re opening up your umbrella 🌂 and go u u u u

v: just get into your imaginary van and drive it v v v v

w: open up your palms in front of you and blow air over them w w w w

x: put out your hands like you are snapping with an x-ray camera 📷 and go x x x.

y: pretend to hold a cup of yoghurt with one hand and with the other hand as your spoon and eat it y y y y

z: spread out your wings like a buzzing bee 🐝 and go z z z

These are the twenty six English Alphabet sounds and their demonstrations.

I will be taking the sounds with their examples in my next lesson.
