What is Education?

The word Education is actually broad and can be viewed in various aspect by different people. Some people can limit education to the regular knowledge gained by merely attending fixed classes. For me, the word Education goes beyond the normal or regular attending of schools to gain certificate. I see Education as a continuous learning process that never ends. Since the word Education is quite broad, we can categorize it into 3 divisions to fully understand the concept, and they are as follows.

• formal Education
• Informal Education
• non-formal Education

Formal education: is one which individuals acquires knowledge through a formal setting. Our regular nursery, primary, secondary and tertiary institutions are under this category. In this setting, knowledge is passed from a person with higher knowledge known as the teacher to those who are novice(students). Certificates are usually awarded at the end of a program and their is a fixed duration for each program.

Informal Education

This type involves the knowledge children gets from their parents which might not be related to academics. It could be random knowledge about how to cook their favorite food or how to dance or do any other activities. Children do not get knowledge just from their parents, it could be from what they watch, what they read, what they read on social medial etc.. as what as what they learn from others, and this knowledge is not just restricted to academics.

Non-formal Education

This has to do with adults. It involves self development as well as learning a skill for the purpose of survival. This skill is usually flexible and not fixed. There are wide varieties of non-formal Education that a person can select from.

Why is it important to a child?

To fully explain this, let’s use an example that is common to all of us. If a man wants to build a new house probably a storey building, he needs the services of lots of people, after making an estimate of the cost. The engineer Incharge of the construction ensures that the foundation is well laid and quality materials are used for the construction as this will ensure the building does not collapse in a long run. Education is said to be the basis and can probably determine how good a child would be to the society. Education helps the child when it comes to developing of social relationship with other children, as they are able to communicate, play, as well as share ideas among their peers. When children are educated from infancy, they become confident and are able to face challenges much later in life.

At what age should a child start learning?

The holy books clearly states that children should be trained from infancy. But why? According to science it shows that children have more active and numerous neurons at early age. This neurons helps them to grasp and capture what ever they learn. For me, I think children should be taught right from the womb.

What is done in your locality to Embrace Modern Education?

During my early days, there was nothing like preschool or prenursery, infact before going to school one has to ensure that your hand can cross over your head and touch your ear before one is enrolled in a school. Well, the world is advancing and so are the things in the world advancing too., all thanks to technology. Today a lot of people have embraced the modern education as most children are sent to school even before they could speak. Children are not just restricted to the theoretical aspect of education, but they are taught how to operate electronic devices. Most schools have also encorporated skill acquisition in their curriculum so as to enable children have skills at an early age. The tone with which children speak these days, shows that, they are moving along with modern technology.

Educating a child should not be underestimated as these children will be the next generation with super brains and better skills to move their generation to the next level, it is advisable for every individual not to neglect educating a child, wether male or female.
