Drawing my Cocoyam

The cocoyam plant is one of the source of carbohydrate in many parts of Nigeria. It grows as a cash crop and is also seen around growing as a weed around the house.
Taro is one of the most commonly planted species of cocoyam used as vegetables and planted for its corms, stems, petioles and leaves.
Both the cocoyam croms and young leaves are essential ingredients in a local delicacy known as Ekpang nkukwo by the Ibibio people in Nigeria while the Bakweri and Bafaw people of Cameroon call the dish Ekwang Coco.
Cocoyam is also a key ingredient in the preparation of Achu.

Let's not get carried away by some delicious traditional dishes, our aim for this post was the drawing of a cocoyam plant

What do we need?

To draw our cocoyam, we will need the following items and a comfortable drawing space and table.

This was captured at the back of my house...

Step 1

I started from the stem and drew my way up to the petioles

Step 2

I now had to draw in the cocoyam leaves. Some cocoyam leaves were so big and because they have water-repelling surfaces preventing them from getting wet, we used them as umbrella on our way back from school when I was in primary school.

Step 3

Clean off parts of the petioles that are covered by the leaves.

Step 4

Drawing in the leaves midrib and vaines, an intricate network of lines.

Step 5

Applying the colours, I started from the stem with a deeper shade of green.

Step 6

A lighter shade of green was used on the cocoyam leaves.
