With the increase in childhood obesity, I always feel that push to write and let both parents and children know how important it is to eat healthily. There are a lot of factors that leads to childhood obesity but I will be excluding the genetic factor in this post and focus on factors that can be controlled by both parents and children.


     What is Childhood obesity?

For every age group, there is always a range of weight a child shouldn't go above. A child is said to be obese when such child surpasses their healthy weight limits. There are a lot of factors that can cause a child to be obese, some of which are the nature of food intake, social factors, physical activities and genetics (which won't be discussed here today)

There has been an increasing rise in the number of obesity in children and It is increasing by the day. I saw a picture on social media which really prompted this post. A picture of the fattest man in 1890, and he wasn't even up to the weight of an obese child in this century. It will be a joke to compare him with the fattest child in this century. It shows how unhealthy the future will be in the next years. The health of humans is going at a downward spin and it looks like people aren't doing something about this.

Controlling this at a very younger age would be better, as parents we should try to make sure that our children aren't obese but healthy. The following factors are causes of childhood Obesity.


 Factors That Affect Childhood Obesity

Away from genetic factors, there are a lot of factors that causes childhood obesity and there are:


      1) Lack of Physical Activity:

It is funny how some parents stop their kids from taking part in physical activities. I met a lady whose children aged 8 and 11 are not allowed to do any physical activity. She is even against exercises. Unknown to her, she thinks she is keeping her children from suffering, but some physical activities are meant to keep the children fit.

Some kids don't do anything other than sit down at home with their gadgets or maybe watching the TV for hours. This causes obesity too. Some schools too don't do some physical activities but make the children to sit hours learning and then they all go home after school.
A lack of Physical activities like walking, running, dancing, playing, and other exercises can cause childhood obesity.


  2) Eating Processed and fast foods: 

Eating process foods has caused more harm than good to children. It is a known fact that processed are generally low on the nutrients needed by children. It is instead high on calories and this can cause obesity to the children. Some of these food are low on minerals, vitamins, proteins etc. Processed foods are generally unhealthy for the children and it's intake should be reduced as much as possible.


 How can Obesity be controlled?

It is very important to stay healthy and fit as humans, children not being an exception. The following are steps to stay healthy and not obese.

  1. Eat Healthy Food: it is very important to expose the children to healthy eating from a young age. They should reduce the intake of processed foods and carbs and take more fruits and vegetables, eggs, beef, salt, etc. Have a diet plan for the children. Schools should also make sure that kids eat healthily too. Eating the right amount of food is important. Though finances might be a factor to not eating well but parents should endeavour to allow healthy eating for their kids.

  1. Taking physical activities seriously:
    Physical activities are very important in the life of children. It is not a thing for only adult. Take your child out for a run, walk or an exercise session. Keep them fit from a young age and see them get healthy. Teach them it is important to exercise their body and lead by example too.

Childhood obesity is an important subject that should be discussed at length. The kids should be helped. Health is very important, just like it is said that health is wealth.

You are what you eat...keep fit... Eat Healthily.
