MODERN MEANING (CONCEPT) OF EDUCATION...
Hey Friends.....❤️
Modern concept of education is learner-centred. The learner occupies the central place in the educational process. Education revolves around the learner. "Teach the pupil rather than the subject" is the watchword of modern education. The pupil is not to be subordinated to an external discipline, a rigid syllabus, a centrally proposed time table or activities suiting only to the institution or the teacher.
The modern concept of education can best be highlighted by making a comparative study of the old and modern concept of education.
- Meaning of education: The modern concept of education means to draw out the best in the pupil-body, mind and spirit. It means to develop the inherent capacities of the learner in the social cavironment in the best possible manner. It stands for the wholesome, balanced and all round development of personality. In the old concept, education was considered as process to thrust into the mind of the learner ready-made it-bits of knowledge as if the mind was a empty vessel.
- Aim of education : Old concept of education emphasised only intellectual or mental development of personality. Acquisition of knowledge was considered as the main aim of old concept of education. Modern education emphasises development of total personality i.e., physical, intellectual, emotional and social aspect of personality of the pupils. Thus modern education aims at maximum development of individuality, social efficiency and dynamism.
- Curriculum: Old or traditional curriculum was subject-centred. These subjects were included and emphasised in the curriculum which promote merely intellectual development. This type of curriculum was rigid and was confined mostly to classroom work and experiences. Modern curriculum is activity-centred, varied, progressive and dynamic in the sense that it satisfies the needs of the developing child as well as the demands of ever changing modern society.
- Methods of teaching: Old and traditional methods emphasised rote learning, rote memorisation or cramming. Therefore, education was dull, monotonous, boring, uninteresting, unpsychological and lifeless. Various teaching devices like exposition and explanation, narration, description, stories and illustrations like maps, models, charts, pictures, diagrams, graphs and various other audio-visual aids are used. Maxims of caching like to 'proceed from known to unknown', 'simple to complex', 'concrete to abstract', 'empirical to rational', and 'psychological to logical' are followed. Modern methods of teaching inclúde play-way method, learning by doing, learning by experience, earning by living, project method etc. These are interesting, psychological and lively methods. These methods arouse attention, interest and motivation.
- Freedom and discipline: Traditional and old concept of discipline was rigid and repressionistic. It emphasised the use of force, rod and punishment. Modern educationists have given up the concept of enforced discipline through repression. Modern concept of discipline is self-discipline. Freedom of pupil is emphasised in it. Students learn discipline in an atmosphere of freedom. "Spare the rod and spoil the Child" is no more philosophy of the school discipline in modern education. Students' government (self-government), students' clubs, students' societies-all participate in making the discipline democratic, creative and conducive to the needs of the students.
