Giving gifts is a custom in our society, it should be something like a show of love. It's interesting that it's one of the five love languages.
I agree with what your mother points out, that it is much better to give useful gifts, because they will satisfy a need, and it is possible that this will bring greater joy.
Giving gifts is also an opportunity to get to know others in greater depth, thinking about their tastes and needs is a good way to get to know them, accentuate the ties that unite them.
