Hello everyone, I am here to post my answer to the social studies lesson assignment by @udyliciouz in this community: @steemkidss.

Transportation

Transportation is the movement of people and things (luggage) from one place to the other. This can be done by water (seas and rivers), land (roads and rail), by air (airplanes, jets, and helicopters). Here In Nigeria, the very commonly used means of transportation islands, especially roads, not because of the cost which is cheaper, is because it is readily available, unlike the rails which have been have not been functional.

Benefits of Transportation

• Delivery of goods and also services to customers:
  In business, the production process is not complete the produce go through other distributing chain i.e from the manufacturer to the wholesaler to the retailer and till it is delivered to the final consumers.
  Transportation aids the activities in distribution chain, products or goods probably may be made at the outlying district of a town and needs to be carried though means of transportation to the wholesaler, from there the retailer come in to buy the products and also transport them to his/her shop.

• Employment for transport workers:
  In inter city or intra city transportation, there are a lot of vehicle owners that their source of income is through transportation, the make a living from it.
  Apart from vehicle owners, transportation gives and provides Job like car washes, the people who do what we know as “loading” at bus stops.
  We also have those like; fulltime driver, captains and sailors, pilots who make off a living from transportation.

• Transportation of farm produce:
  Farm produce have very short lives when harvested and it is needful to be transported to potential consumers before spoilage organisms cause it to perish.
  Transportation create that ease for farmer to make farm produce which is food accessible and available to the residents in the urban region.

• Foreign exchange and importation using seaports are also benefits of transportation:
  Here Exportation and importation of goods as well as services are made which this has the potential of increasing in foreign exchange.

Four problems of modern Transportation

• Increasing environmental pollution by vehicles:
  Road transportation here in Nigeria contributes majorly to noise and air pollution. This threatens the wellbeing of the motorist and people.
  Automobile carbon monoxide, lead, nitrogen emissions and hydrocarbons are toxic to the health of man and other living things.

• Poor road transport infrastructure:
  In Nigeria this one of the many problems of transport system.
  No proper drainage system in most of the paved road and some have damage asphalt surface.
  It is very hard to drive on roads with potholes and uneven surfaces most especially during raining season. Some even get flooded.
  This affects the mobility of many road transport users.

• Road congestion due to urbanization and overpopulation:
  In search of jobs, business opportunities, health services and education, etc., a lot of people move from the rural to the urban areas. This causes towns and cities to be overpopulated.
  Over 90% of freight and passenger transportation services and activities in Nigeria’s urban region use roads.

• Poor road maintenance:
  This highly contributes to the bad poor road transport infrastructure in our country Nigeria.
  Road networks that were made years ago have worn out because of poor maintenance and low quality materials that is being used for repair. Road are rarely repaired until they are completely damaged.
  This leads to accident and lose of life.

The solutions to the problem of modern transportation.

• Parking Restrictions:
  In central areas of large towns, the possibility to give sufficient space for all parking is slight. Parking should be restricted by banning parking or making it expensive.
  This will minimize some unnecessary road jam.

• Traffic Management Measures:
  Relief from road traffic jam and congestion may be achieved by the introduction or bringing of traffic management schemes.
  Some lanes on multi-lane highways can be allocated to incoming, and to outgoing traffic, in the morning and afternoon in respective order. This will provide a tidal flow.

• Development of Additional Road Capacity:
  This has been followed throughout the world, creating and constructing of bypass(es) to divert traffic.
  This will help in reducing the congestion and combatment in urban roads.
