Hello fellow steemians this is my entry for the writing contest with the title "Honesty is the best policy". I hope you will have a good time while you go through my post.

I appreciate @goodybest for organizing this wonderful contest.

INTRODUCTION

There are so many qualities required of us as social beings. These qualities build up and define our personalities and they are part of what I would call character. One of these qualities is honesty. Honesty is the quality of always standing by the truth no matter what you are faced with.

I will be talking about a true story from my own experience so sit back, relax and enjoy.

HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY

As a young adult, coming from a poor background I had to struggle to make ends meet. And sometimes I get faced with the wrong choices staring at me. But as much as possible I always avoided doing things that I know are not honest.

Due to the challenges I was faced with at my home, I had to look for a job that could at least get me as much as enough food on the table.

In my hunt for a job, I came across this shop. It was a gas filling shop and I reluctantly went to the owner of the shop to tell him about my interest in working for him as one of his sales boy. Fortunately for me, I got the job and was asked to start the next Monday week.

I became really happy knowing that at last I've got something to keep my self going.

On that Monday I woke up as early as 4:am prepared myself and as soon as it was 6:30am, I took my leave and off I went to my new place of work.

On getting there, I was told the rules and regulations of the work which I was quite comfortable with. Being my first day at work it wasn't really easy learning the skills involved in the work.

After some weeks on this job, I a started getting along really fine. I became really friendly with my co-workers. We became very close, all enjoying our job. We were a total of five workers (boys).

But I noticed something. Whenever our boss went out, the other boys will connive and agree to increase the price so that they could keep some money to themselves. They asked me to join them but I refused. They always laughed at me, making jokes of me saying that hunger would be the first thing to kill me even before my village people will remember me.

Like every other morning, I woke up hurriedly preparing for the long day ahead. I got to work a little later than the resumption time(which was 7:am).

The day was really hectic as usual. With a lot of work which we still had at hand.

In the evening time, our boss had gone out again when a man came and wanted to have his gas filled. The other boys quicky came and as usual increased the price in a bid to cheat the man. Once again, they had their way.

Not more than 30 minutes after the man had gone, our boss came back. Which was very unusual of him because he usually came back late in the evenings.

When he came he asked all of us to sit so he could talk with us. Then I knew something was wrong now. He asked us how much we sold the gas for the last customer that just came in. And boom we were all waiting for answers but no answers came and so with the next threatening from our boss answers came forth. Unknowing to us or should I say them our boss had already discussed the price with the man but just decided not to tell us so he could test us.

At last these boys were caught and had their salaries reduced by half for that month then my boss summed up all the rest half of their salaries and paid it to me added to my own for that month.Honesty paid for me that month. Not only that but I also became the most loved and trusted by my boss. Indeed Honesty is the best policy.

MORAL LESSONS

  • Always learn to stand by what is right never follow the crowd
  • Wherever you find yourself never let down your gaurd always be who you are.

IN CONCLUSION

Sometimes the best things of life are not things that can be measured with money. But they are the basic things that make us who we are.

I would like to invite @kinase, @ruthjoe, @sahmie and others who would like to be part of this contest.

This is beautifully written. As a matter of fact, money is not everything in life. I like the fact that you said that

"Sometimes the best things of life are not things that can be measured with money."

You are rightly right. Thank you for sharing this wonderful lesson with us.
