The Importance Of Co-Education.

▪︎ What is the meaning of co-education ?

Co-education is the opposite of a gender segregated educational system where we have all girls or only boys.
In a Co-educational system both boys and girls are educated together in the same school and in the same class.

I can say I attended primary school in a Co-educational school at NNMC Staff School, Okuiboko in Itu LGA. My secondary school at East Itam, in Itu local government area of AkwaIbom State was also a Co-educational system, and locally we mostly refer to such school as mixed schools. Most schools in AkwaIbom State where I grow up are Co-educational but the boarding schools like Cornelia Connelly College at Itak is only for girls and the technical school was only for boys.

▪︎ Which education you will prefer for your kids ? Coeducational centres or all boys /all girls educational centres ?

I will send my kids to a Co-educational school because I think there are things that we who passed through such schools had to learn early in life that schooling in an all girls or all boys school will not teach a child.

Learning together teach better

▪︎ How does Co-educational centres play role in developing personality of a child ?

A Co-educational school may not have any subject about boys or about girls but as both boys and girls learn together, they also learn about each other and this affects the personality of a child.
They develop important social skills such as cooperation, teamwork, and empathy. And are also becoming used to the way the opposite sex thinks and there perspectives in different issues. Developing knowledge and skills which can be beneficial in later life.

▪︎ Merits and demerits of Co-education.

The merits of Co-educational learning include learning how to interact with persons of the opposite sex in a respectful and healthy way.

• It creates an inclusive environment were all are being encouraged to participate and contribute as a result the children grow up to see the gender as being mutually dependent and deserving of respect.
• The children develop social skills like learning to be and work comfortable around people of any genders.

The demerits of co-education include the problems it creates in cultures that do not allow both genders to work together.

• Some parents may be uncomfortable, feeling that their child will become promiscuous if they associated with the opposite sex in school.
• We also have the risk of sexual harassment or assault happening among the student.
• the risk of sexual immoral behaviors taking root among the students.

Learning together is better than only boys

A Co-educational systems makes children better prepared for the real life after school.
