INTRODUCTION
I'm Echam Roland. I am from the Republic of Cameroon. I am a student reading international Law in the University of Bamenda. I am a student Lecturer as well.
WHAT I DID
Being a student and lecturing some undergraduate courses like introduction to International Relations and Local governance, I understand how effective lectures should be. When I enrolled for my Masters Program, I hardly had time to attend classes because of other commitments. One day I decided to get busy with my lectures. The first class I attended, The professor thought for just about 3hrs and told us he was done with the course. He gave us the course outline to follow to meet up with whatever he did not touch. I felt really bad about this but what was I to to? I was just to do research like the others. I discovered no one was happy with this.
The next Lecturer came in and taught for 2 hours and basically I understood nothing from the lectures. When the class was over, I asked a few other students about the class and no one seemed to understand anything. I started thinking of what to do And came to the conclusion that i will organise extra Clases for my mates to make things easier during exams.
I created a WhatsApp forum and invited my class mates via group invite. This was in a bit to attract only those who needed the lectures and the revision. I ended up having almost the whole class in the forum. Things like this must not be done in the hidding so I informed the head of department for the department of Political science in the faculty of law and political science about it and he appreciated the effort with some cash and a go ahead. I announced that the revision was to start 2 weeks to exam so as to enable me to trash all sensitive areas. The idea was welcomed by the students.
The next class, I discovered the number of students in class had reduced by half and when I asked those who were absent about what happened, They told me that they were waiting for my revision and that they were not ready for normal class sessions.
Shuu!!! The students requested that we hold a class as fast as we can to test how far I can go. Behold that night I did my research and was ready for them. little did I know they were preparing questions for me😂😂 This is what i like. Some wanted to challenge me but them no reach.
On the D. Day The class was full. No one was absent. We had planned to treat international humanitarian law. ( The law governing the conduct of war). I had regional delegates for local governance in Class, President for All lawyers for NW in Class, Principals, Civil servants etc. The outcome was wonderful. The Question and answer session at the end of the class was supperp. The interaction was wonderful. I ended by giving a revision question for CA and it came in the CA exactly the way i gave it.Little did I know I had spies who were sent from the faculty.
That one no concern me.
They Mobilise to start paying a class at 5000frs each. I knew nothing of this plan. I have always wanted to help humanity with what God has given me for free and this was the opportunity. Two weeks to exam, all those who stopped attending Clases showed up and paid their money to the guy they had elected to be collecting. I had a total of 30 students in class and all paid 5k each. After the class, I left and went to the office without knowing anything about the money. While in the office chatting and laughing carelessly with colleagues, A delegation came from my class that they wanted to see me. I went outside and they gave me and envelope. I opened it and It was 150k. They thanked me and said they are preparing their monies for the class of tomorrow. I felt tears rolling down my cheeks.
I had promised myself and God that it was free and that it was my own way to help them. I called them back and gave the money to them. I told them classes were for free. Ele joy. I was happy that i was impacting peoples lives. I instructed them to share the to the owners and that they were free to come for the next class.
I would have made 750k for 5 days and it was to be for 10days. I did this exercise for the 3 semesters that we had. Good enough the questions I gave for revision on each course appeared in the exams like magic.
The results were wonderful..
HOW I WAS REWARDED
The rewards came in the form of wine, Outings Parties organised for me and the one that really touched me Was;
During the last Semester, I decided to pay half fees with the aim of paying the last instalment before pre defense. When exams Came up, I had registered for the courses I was supposed to seat for and by the school constitution I had every right to seat for the courses. But that was not the case. On the very first day of exams, A control team came by to fish out those who had not paid fees or those still owing. They were colleagues. I told them I will meet them outside After the exam we were writing was over and that they understood. Immiediately after the course, I went outside to see them and explained that i did not prepare to pay fees at the moment and that i will sort it out after exams.
The next seating, I went inside the hall and started writing when a team from the Dean's Office came by. I knew non of them so I could not actually plead with anyone. Some student had been sent outside and when it came to my turn, I was very bitter as to why they chose to disturb while I'm writing and reminded them of the last Semester we were still to have which by law I will not sit for defense without finishing the fees. Seems no one was listening to me. I decided to abandon the paper in anger and started leaving the hall. I heard guys grumbling. They were not happy that i was being Molested like that. When I went further again outside, the exam atmosphere changed into something else. The invigilators could not control anyone. Rumours about what happened reached the central administration and the control team was sanctioned immiediately But I was nowhere to be found. I had gone home already. Few minutes later I received a call from school that I should come and continue exams. I had given up. I just wanted to cancel the program and travel very far from the institution. Well!! I came back to school and continued from where I ended. Extra time was given to me so I could finish. After the last course, I connered of my friends and asked what happened and he told me immiediately I left, there was a riot that i be brought back or everyone will not write the exams.
We had contributed money for end year party. One of my class mates even wrote an under taking to pay my fees immiediately after the course. When the course was over money was reduced from an initially planned end of year party to pay my fees. As if that was not enough, Contributions were launched on my behalf and 50k was raised and given to me. I gave 25k back to the party coffers so no item will be lacking as initially planned.
I could not go for the party because the shock was too much. I slept as early as 7pm that day. I was shocked that a private car was sent from the party ground to come pick me up at 8.30pm. The car was made up of 2 Gerndames and myself. The security officers were sent because of the insecurity we are facing in the North West Region of Cameroon. ONE GOOD TURN DESERVES ANOTHER.
