Honesty is indeed an important virtue everyone should possess, despite the fact that we live in a corrupt world. Many people stopped believing honest people still exist because almost everyone they have come across has portrayed a mischievous act.

The truth is that honest people still exist; it's just that the number of dishonest people on the surface of the earth outweighs the number of honest people. This makes it look like there are no more honest people on the surface of the earth.

I will be taking our politicians for example. When they come out for campaigning, they promise us a better tomorrow; they promise a better change, but once voted in, they forget those promises and let the masses suffer. Such a person is dishonest, as they could not stand by their words, so automatically they lied to the public.

I was born into a Christian home, and honesty has been like a motto for us. Every little thing that goes missing, you will hear my mom shouting, "remember that the truth will set you free". Sometimes you might end up regretting ever telling the truth, but sometimes she tries to see to it that you don't regret doing so.

One day, my friends and I were coming back from school when we found a nylon bag in the nearby bushes. We were curious and did not hesitate to check the content of the nylon bag; I have never seen so much money like that before. We wondered how it came about and were already planning on how to go about sharing the money.

My house was the first stop, and while we were engrossed in the conversation, we did not notice my mom standing there. My mom collected the money and counted it; the money was about 400,000 naira. She said she was going to take it to the authorities, and to be sincere, my friends and I were sad she had killed our dreams and how we planned on spending the money.

That evening, it was announced that the owner was looking for his money; he had it in front of his motorcycle and did not notice when it fell off. She gathered all of us, and we went to the man's house; she gave the money to him. He said it was his business money; he was going to get goods only to reach the market and could not find the money he had in front of his motorcycle.

He was grateful indeed; he paid our school fees and bus fees for two terms. He took this load off our parents, and they were also happy and proud of us. To date, I still call him anytime I need financial assistance, and he has been like a second father to me. Indeed, honesty is the best policy.

Moral Lesson.

• Do not allow greed to control you; if my friends and I had done things our way, I wouldn't have someone who keeps assisting me financially.

• Honesty is a virtue.
