Responsibility for elderly parents
Who is responsible for taking care of and serving elderly parents?
The younger ones (children & the youth) and the government are responsible for caring for and serving elderly parents. Caring for and serving elderly parents involves their physical and emotional needs.
- Physical need: This covers provision of food which is daily, provision of shelter and provision of clothing. We also have to help them with house chores and run errands.
- Emotional need: This has to do with conscious feelings and physiological experiences of the elderly parents. We need to be around them always, engage them in meaningful discussion and value their wisdom. We should not rebuke them but correct them in love because they are fragile.
The government also is supposed to develop policies and programmes that will be beneficial to the elderly parents who are the senior citizens of the country.
What should be the attitude towards elderly parents in society?
As children and younger ones, we are expected to have a positive attitude towards elderly parents in society. We are to love and respect our elderly parents. At this age, they are tender and need to be treated with lots of care. The Bible says in 1 Timothy 5:1-2 “Never speak harshly to an older man, but appeal to him respectfully as you would to your own father, treat older women as you would your mother”. Having a positive attitude towards the elderly has a way of bringing healing to their mental health.
How can the dignity and security of elderly parents be ensured in society?
The dignity and security of the elderly parent can be ensured through:
- Engaging them in making a decision that concerns them.
- Respect them for who they are.
- Always enquire whether they enjoy your services to them.
- Ensure they eat well.
- Make sure they dress well.
- Ensure that the floor is not slippery
- There should always be light for illumination.
- Someone should always be around with them.
What steps should be taken to protect the mental and physical health of elderly parents?
To protect the mental health of the elderly, they need to be engaged socially. This could be attending church services and other community group meetings. They can also interact with the world socially through Facebook, YouTube, WhatsApp, etc. With these, they will be informed and feel accepted
Their physical health can also be protected through engaging in physical exercise or activities ( walking), staying in a clean and healthy environment, eating a balanced diet and ensuring clinical checks (blood pressure, sugar level etc) regularly.
