What is tailoring?

Tailoring in a layman's term, is defined as the act or process of using certain skills to sew clothes either using a machine or hand sewing. Tailoring in general is not restricted to sewing alone. It is also the art of adjusting clothes to fit a person's unique body shape. It spans from cutting, designing, weaving, fitting and finishing clothes and then issuing them out to customers or for sale.

Who is a tailor?A tailor is a person who alters or makes clothes in men's clothing particularly.

Seemstress: is a woman who sews clothes and earn by this.

Fashion designer: is a person that designs new clothing styles and patterns.

Terms associated with Tailoring

  • Sewing: For a layman, sewing is the act of mending, stitching or joining clothes using a needle and thread. In a general term, sewing is a craft that involves stitching, fastening or attaching objects and holding fabrics together with the aid of a sewing needle and thread by hand or with a machine. Another name for sewing is Needlework.

  • Weaving: is a method of textile production or fabric production by interlacing two sets of yarns usually silk threads so that cross they cross each other at right angles to form a cloth... Weaving is also a process of shielding and holding materials from loosening. When you cut a fabric or materials to sew a trouser in particular, you'll have to weave the edges so that it won't loosen. Weaving helps to hold the fabrics together and makes the work neat and nice on the inside.....

  • Cutting fabrics: This is a method of using measurements and a pair of scissors to produce something for sewing. It can be trouser, suit, senator or shirt cutting.

IMG_20220505_113306_180.jpg

  • Measurements: This is an important aspect in tailoring. Measurement in tailoring is not that relative to physical quantities but the distance between one point of human body to another. If these measurements aren't properly taken, they'll be a huge problem with the clothes fixtures.

N/B: There's a big difference between tailoring and sewing..

Importance of tailoring

Many say that tailoring is a very stressful skill you devote much of your time and energy doing. They consider it boring to learn as many can sit one place. But do you know the shocking fact? You have the opportunity to learn tailoring but you refute. Then why become hot tempered when a tailor sews clothes in a way you don't like or it's not fitting? If you perfect sewing, you can sew clothes for yourself and your household without giving a tailor..You can just learn the skill for self use if you don't want to implement it. Here are the importance of tailoring in this modern world.

  • Financial Support: Tailoring is a lucrative business one can review and over review in this modern world. This art or skill is a means of providing for your second basic necessity as a man. This is a means of generating income as people are now into dressing. Schools are looking for good tailors to sew school uniforms. If you perfect it, you can be employed as a stable tailor. You can even be flown oversees to be a perfect fashionista there. The world is basically fashion so you are very much needed. By doing this, you can support yourself financially as well as develop more tailoring skills. Imagine collecting 4k plus for a uniform and you are given 100 uniforms to sew, that's a hundred thousand plus which in steem it's 400 steem by 250N.

  • Solving your basic necessity: Everyone knows that clothing is one of our basic necessity, so we need clothes to appear well and look good at all times. Instead of spending money on a tailor to sew your clothes, you can sew it for yourself and family members. You sew it how you want it to look like without instructing a tailor on how to go about it. Simple tear in your clothes can be sewn by you without taking it to a tailor to amend that small place

  • You never know emergency day-of repair: It's important you know sewing as a skill so thst in case of emergency, you can tailor it yourself. Let's take an example. You have a sewing machine at home but you don't know how to run it. As you were about going to work, your cloth had a big tear. You cannot run the machine so you'll have no choice but to take it to a tailor. If you knew how to sew, you wouldn't have had to bother much.

  • Your as a tailor likely knows what fits you better than another tailor do since you are the one sewing.

  • Getting pre-owned, well sewn newly tailored clothes feels as good as buying them new ones or ready-made ones.

Setbacks as a tailor and how to tackle them

  • Collecting a lot of clothes when you know very well that you wouldn't have enough time to complete them and return them to the owner in time. This is the worst thing any tailor should do because he'll likely face customer's problems. Many tailors are in jail because of not giving customer's clothes in time. Imagine you promise to sew someone's cloth and give him before his wedding day and on that fateful day, you disappoint him. He calls your line and you refuse to answer. You can tackle that by being straightforward not being after the money except you have assistance or people that would help you. If time won't favour you, you kindly and respectfully tell the person you won't have time.

  • Being diligent and very much careful with customers clothes.Any small mistake in the cloth can invite problem. View people cloth as a fragile stuff. It shouldn't be handled anyhow.
