JUVENILE DELINQUENCY

Juvenile delinquency is the act of commiting a crime, the violation of law at a very young age. This is an antisocial and criminal behavior committed by a teenager under the age of 18. Delinquents are underage individuals that perform illegal activities and exhibit behaviors which the society does not approve and for which some kind of punishment or corrective measures are carried in the public interest.

The Types/Forms of Juvenile Delinquency include

  • Individual Delinquency: Refers to delinquency in which only one individual is involved in commiting an illegal actand it's cause is located within such individual. Most of the explanations of this delinquency is caused by psychological problems.

  • Situational Delinquency: This type of delinquency is not deeply rooted and the motives and means for controlling it are relatively simple, mostly arising from situations that presents itself at the moment the delinquent is irresistible to.

  • Organised Delinquency: Refers to delinquent acts committed by organised groups, whereby a set of values and norms guide behaviors of group members to encourage delinquent acts.

  • Group Supported Delinquency: This type of delinquency is carried out in companionship with others and whose root cause originates from the culture of the individual's home and neighborhood.

Causes Of Juvenile Delinquency

Following a quick survey in my area, their common causes are;

  • Family Problems (Broken Families): There's a popular saying that goes "charity begins at home". Yes, family plays a vital role in shaping a teen's behavior and grooming his/her personality. Family influence contributes to more delinquent behaviors. When there's disturbance at home, frequent fights, criminal parents, lack of love, attention, and no emotional bonding between parents and their children, they're most likely to go astray and become violent including single parents who are too busy to create quality time with their children forcing them to seek attention from their peers.

  • Peer Group Influence: Research has shown that the more time juveniles spend with their peers, engaging in unwholesome activities are likely to lead to volatile relationships that promote delinquent behaviors such as drinking, smoking, stealing, gambling and rape, etc.

  • Lack Of Finances: Teenagers, young or old may lead to a wrong path just to improve their financial conditions. Teens become juvenile delinquents due to lack of finances especially when they can't afford the basic things they need or have to live up to a certain lifestyle just to be accepted by their peers. When they experience poor economic conditions, they start engaging in the wrong activities, selling drugs, prostitution or stealing to improve their economic conditions.

  • Insufficient Educational Infrastructure: Due to poor education infrastructure like small classrooms, less number of teachers, etc is enough misconduct amongst juveniles ranging from vandalism, assault, drugs and alcohol abuse to cheating, lying, obscene language, petty theft and weapon possession.

Consequences Of Juvenile Delinquency

The consequences of juvenile delinquency especially in Nigeria are not only devastating but numerous.
These are a few among many;

  1. Destruction of lives and property.

  2. Creating a bad image of our country and regarding it's growth and development.

  3. Advanced fee fraud and other cybercrimes.

  4. Academic probation and incarceration.

  5. Instability and insecurity amongst families, communities and the society as a whole.Unfortunately, most of the teens around my area and state are involved in acts of delinquency and their common root causes originates from family problems and lack of finances. It is perturbing to see young kids who can make something useful out of their lives by going to school and receiving the right amount of education waste away by engaging in delinquent acts that could ruin their future.

Lastly, juvenile delinquency is a way for minors to get involved in adult crimes since a large percentage of criminal activity has its root cause in childhood causing major problems around the world. It has become a major topic of concern and should be discussed on a more serious note.
