What is decision making

As an individual, occasions occur when one needs to take an action on an idea or a problem. They may include the food to eat, clothes to wear, or wether to read or sleep. This involves making choices, it's often said that your decision will determine your feature or destiny.

Destiny simply means what happens to somebody later in life or something said to be previously ordained to happen.

Decision making involves thinking about the idea or problem, considering alternative and making choices.
Sometimes, it's wise to seek advice before making decisions for ourselves. Always keep in mind that decisions making helps families achieve their goals.
Offentimes, the type of family we come from, our needs, wants and available resources guide people on the type of decisions to take.

Steps in decision making

Making a right decision involves choosing a course of action that will be favourable to all members of tt family.

Below are the steps you must use when taking a decision:

👉 Identify the decision to be made: You must have a clear knowledge of the problem or idea on which a decision had to be taken. An example to illustrate this is what to eat at break-time at the school canteen.

👉 List the alternative: Think deeply and list all available choices that could be made. From my example in the first step, you have to choose from items available at the canteen. Is it biscuits, bread, burger, fish pie, A bottle of coke, a plate of jollof Rice, or Plate of eba and soup?

👉 Consider the consequences of each alternative: Before taking any decision, it's necessary to think and take into consideration each and every point regarding various alternative available. From my example in the first step, you have to consider the money you have, and also consider the nutritional value of each item.

👉 Choose the best alternative: You may have to rank your available choices in order of precedence before you select the one that's best for you. Sometimes it's best to seek the help of our friends, teachers and even our parents in helping us make the right choice.

👉 Evaluate the consequences of your decision: Was it a good decision? Did you achieve your goal?

Types of decisions

Decision making can be divided into two: individual/personal decisions and group/family decisions.
Decision making enables individuals and families to achieve their goals with satisfaction and not with regret.
👉 Individual/personal decisions: These are decisions taken by individuals. They are of personal concern only.
At the level of students in secondary School, personal decisions to be made shouldn't be complex or complicated.

Below are a few simple decisions that teenagers or young adolescents may need to take.

  • Choice of school to attend. They are amny secondary Schools to choose from, the individual may have to choose between a boarding or day school.
  • Choice fo clothes ot wear.
  • Eating the right type of food.
  • To be obedient or disobedienct to elders.
  • To work hard or to be lazy at home and in the school.
  • To be honest ot dishonest with people.
  • To be polite or rude to people around us.
  • To be God-fearing or be rebellious
  • Choice of friends.
  • To love or to hate people.

You can choose your friends but you cannot choose your parents, students must learn how to spend money wisely.
A person has to develop a heart of contentment to be able to make a right decision. When you make a right decision or choice, you will have peace of mind and you will live a lifestyle that your friends and peers would desire and envy.

👉 Family decisions: These are decisions taken in agreement by all family members. Each individual goals, roles and standards are out into consideration.
Decision by groups are slower to take than personal decisions. This is because family decisions are often subject to a great deal of conflict, e.g. not all family members may like the idea of their mum getting a dog or a cat as a pet, I am definitely one of the because I dislike both animals.

Family decisions include the following:

  • Renting a house.
  • Pocket money for the children.
  • Buying of good items.
  • No television for the kids.
  • Who should buy clothes for the family?
