Hello, dear lovely kids, It's another week and another exciting literature class.
Please pay attention and learn from this week's lesson.
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to define figures of speech, examples of figures of speech and I hope the topic of this week will be useful to all the kids out there.
Without further waste of time, what is a figure of speech?
A figure of speech or rhetorical figure is a word or phrase that entails an intentional deviation from ordinary language use to produce a rhetorical effect.
Examples of figures of speech
- Simile
A smile is a figure of speech in which two things are likened because of certain common qualities to them using words like "Like or As".
Examples;
- The man fights like a lion.
- As dark as the night.
- Irony
A figure of speech in which the literal meaning of the word is more or less the opposite of what the speaker intends.
Examples;
1)I love snake so much
2)I do speak with my nose.
- Oxymoron
Two words or phrases f opposite or contracting meanings that are juxtaposed for rhetorical effect.
Example;
1)The woman wept for joy in being united with her baby.
2)The story of my life as being bittersweet.
- Paradox
A statement that appears to be absurd or contradictory but which on a close examination, reveals an important truth.
Example;
1)Attack is the best form of defense
2)The life we live today is like a two-edged sword.
- Hyperbole
This involves the use of exaggeration for emphasis.
Example;
1)The whole world stood still to listen to him.
2)I am so angry that I can kill myself.
- Euphemism
A mild, indirect, and more pleasant term is used in place of a blunt or unpleasant one to conceal the real nature of the issue communicated.
Example;
1)The old man has finally passed away(that is died).
2)The teacher is telling a tall story (that is a lie)
- Metaphor
A contracted smile whereby, the two dissimilar things or persons which are only similar in quality, are fully equated with one another without using words like 'Like' or 'As'. This becomes a direct comparison. The two things compared should however not belong to the same class.
Example;
1)He is a lion
2)Pearls of wisdom- wise words
- Alliteration
This is the repetitive use of the same consonant sound at the beginning of two or more words on the same line.
Example;
1)Bouncing Baby Boy.
2)Peter Piper Picked A Peck Of Pickled Pepper.
