Thediarygame for (20-01-2024): My Day In Words and Pictures
Dear diary
Saturday seems to be a very busy day because most people carryout many activities this day including rest.
During morning
By the grace of God, I woke up and have my morning prayer. Then I needed to do cleaning up in the house expecially now that have resume work. Washing every day as before is had, so Saturday like this is the best day for it.
After cleaning up the house, I perform laundry work which takes time because the clothes was much. Then I refresh, have my meal before going to rest.
Late noon/ Evening
Am always glad and excited to learn new things. It gives me Joy anytime I acquired new knowledge. In life, one of the thing that improve individual is learning. So,
When it come to learning, I don't joke with it.
The new thing I learnt that am going to share here with is you is called otong. Otong is what is used in place of lime stone or bicarbonate to remove the bitter taste from Editan leaf.
My Mom is the one that is going to show me how to prepare the mixture. I will only be following the instructions given to me and then come out with the substance.
This is dry plantain peels. It was dry by me few days back. Since we are on Harmattan season, the drying didn't take a longer days.
Using a roofing sink, I gathered all the plantain peels one place and set fire to burn. Waiting close there with a long stick to push in those that are yet to be burn until everything get burnt.
When am done, I allowed it to cool. Then, used your hands to squeeze the mixture to be in powder form.
With my bowl, I packed every mixture inside. Looking at it, the mixture looks ashes.
I add water into the mixture, stir it thoroughly and allow it to settle before filtering.
After filtering, everything was store in a use bottle water.
Looking at the mixture, it has a two separate color. The upper one is transparent while the lower side in black in color.
Any day am going to cook Editan soup, I will be making use of the upper one which is the transparent water to take away the bitter taste from my editan.
I also learnt that the Otong water is very effective and good in the body than lime stone or bicarbonate which can be poisonous.
Stop throwing away your plantain peels. Keep it dry and follow this step to get this mixture for your Editan soup.
Nice post, you have actually followed through on the processing steps to arrive at getting the final product which will use to wash off the bitter part of editan leaf. The liquid can also be used to prepare African salad with dried fish, and it goes down well with fresh palmwine. Such delicacy is usually served during the traditional marriages in Akwa Ibom State.
Keep up the good work.
Wahoooooo, thank for sharing another way of using the liquid.

Thanks @elinay
Thank you for teaching us how to prepare ottong which is used to remove the bitterness in editang leaf instead of the known bicarbonate or limestone. Yes, it is more healthy. We the igbos use it to prepare isiewu or abacha. The steps are easy to understand.
You surely did a lot of work on Saturday. Washing piled up clothes and cleaning. Thank you for sharing.
If you keep your phone at a landscape form before taking the captures, it will give the pictures the right size.
Thanks mma for the observation, I will be using it as advice.
