I have seen a woman who's oil cought fire and she stoped the fire by covering the burning pot of oil with a very large pot.
The fire in the oil quickly died out when it ran out of air.

Even yesterday I did the above when I was cooking with palm oil and fire came up.
Yes once fire is out of air it will go off immediately,air sustains fire just as food sustains us.
