Update #113: Writing Expedition ✍️ || Technology:When is it right for children to start using smartphones?
Dear parents and kids, I bring to you an interesting subject matter of high impact to everyone here! This has to do with when kids or children should be allowed to use or handle phones.
Children gets easily attracted to objects that they see around them. In the aspect electronic objects, they start their journey to touching or handling electronic gadgets such as television remotes, smartphones or other electronic objects they see around them.
When the children are with their parents, they carefully observe their parents using these gadgets. For instance, they begin by knowing how to select and change the television stations or channels using the remotes. At this time, laying their hands on their parents' phones is included.
This write-up is to raise some concerns about the advantages and some disadvantages of children handling phones.
Parents are nolonger surprised on how fast their children learn how to operate phones. I am not talking of the lowest grades of phone, I mean smartphones. Before I proceed, let me pause to look into what a smartphone is.
A smartphone is a mobile digital device having computer functionalities that runs operating and software applications with internet access for browsing and performing online tasks.
So now, just like the computers, smartphones are now becoming indispensable gadgets and part of our life. It would be estimated that at least, 2 persons in every family have smartphones. The younger persons are the most prominent users of smartphones and the underaged persons are fast joining the que.
Would it surprise you to see a child at the age of 10, operating smartphone? I know this wouldn't be a surprise anyway. There are children that observes and learns exceptionally well and fast. These set of children would even operate smartphones smarter than their parents without anyone teaching them.
To some parents that have smart kids, would they feel safe when their children have access to their smartphones? Here now brings up the concerns about children to handle smartphones. Let's look into the advantages and disadvantages for kids to have smartphones
Some of the advantages for kids to have smartphones include:
Learning and doing their take home assignments
To provide the avenue for them to socialize and talk to their friends online
To keep in touch with you as their parents
To have access to online educational softwares to aid their learnig
Give them fun moments by using the game apps during their free periods
To teach them how make good use of their time by using the calendar in the phone to plan their tasks
Some of the disadvantages for children to handle smartphones are:
They would be exposed to immoral contents
Lack of concentration to studies and home chores
The children may get addiction to phones
As they connected to their friends through social media, it may lead to peer pressure
Tendency to cyber crime
Having seen the good and bad sides of kids handling smartphones, I now conclude by asking these important two questions:
At what age should a kid or child be allowed to handle smartphones?
What control measures should be applied for them not to get exposed to the negative side of handling smartphones?

Honestly, the world is really changing and the integration of phones or devices is essential for kids to aid their learning and also grow financially by learning digital skills. So I feel the right age is when that child has passed puberty stage . It's archaic to tell the child to wait until he enters university or finishes secondary. Parents can set limits to the usage.
