A decentralized social media platform is the type of social media platform that is not controlled by anyone and stands independently. It is a social media platform that is different because it doesn't have a central unit that would implement rules and regulations for users to follow. Steemit is the first ever decentralized social media platform that was created on the Steem blockchain to allow users to have a say via posting their content and earn STEEM coin for engaging in the platform.

Nowadays, people are leaving centralized social media for decentralized social media because of the features and benefits a decentralized social platform offers. One of the key benefits of decentralized social media is the freedom that users enjoy.

Decentralized social networks give users full access to have control over their data and make everyone have autonomy. Decentralized social media are built on blockchain networks.

A good example of decentralized social media is Steemit, which is built on the Steem blockchain to reward content creators. And an example of a centralized social media site is Facebook, which has a centrally controlled unit that looks after users data. Today, most of the decentralized social media that we have is regarded as a Web3 social media platform.

Conclusion:

Decentralized social media is the one that is built on a blockchain network, unlike centralized social media, which is built on a centralized server. Decentralized means there is no central authority controlling the platform; rather, everyone is in control of his or her content, but there should be no abuse of the platform like having multiple accounts, doing plagarism, and so on, which Steemit is highly against.
