Dhaka Traffic Jam: How long is it going to last?

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, is one of the most populated cities in the world. The congestion and traffic jams have become a major problem in the city, and they seem to be getting worse. How long is this going to continue? Bangladesh is a land of opportunities for a large number of people. More than half the population are involved in agriculture, and less than 20% live in towns. The rest are migrants who come to Dhaka from all over the country as labourers or as street vendors. The city has been growing at an unbelievable rate. The population of Dhaka is estimated to be over 20 million by the year 2020, and this is a staggering increase from the current figure of 10 million. Most of the urbanisation in the country is taking place in Dhaka. With the growth of Dhaka city, traffic congestion has become a major problem in Bangladesh. Traffic congestion also affects the economy and productivity of the country. The main causes for traffic congestion are limited road capacity, lack of public transport systems and inadequate parking facilities.

Causes of Traffic Jams:

Traffic congestion has become a common issue in Dhaka. Every day, Dhaka residents experience hours-long traffic jams. The root causes of these traffic jams are many, but all result in large delays for commuters. It not only wastes people's time but also creates environmental pollution. In this article, we will explore some of the most common causes of traffic jams and their effects on the city. We will also discuss possible solutions to this growing problem. First, The major causes of traffic congestion are the lack of proper transportation system, the increasing number of vehicles, and the poor road condition. Besides, the wrong driving habits of the motorists also contribute to the traffic congestion.

The second causes of the traffic jams are people driving their own cars, buses and rickshaws, lack of proper infrastructure, and poor traffic management. The third main reason for traffic jams is the narrow roads and lack of parking space in the city. The fourth reason for traffic jams is the use of private cars with more than five people. The government of the city has launched a campaign to reduce traffic jams in the city. The campaign includes the installation of ‘park and ride’ spots, ‘park n ride’ spots and parking garages in the city.

Emergency Vehicles:

Emergency vehicles are constantly needed in order to help those who are in danger or in need of medical attention. However, Dhaka's traffic congestion has made it difficult for these vehicles to get to their destination in a timely manner. The traffic jam is causing emergency vehicles to be stuck in gridlock for hours, which is resulting in people not receiving the help they need. This issue must be addressed soon, or else people will continue to suffer.

Emergency vehicles such as ambulances and fire trucks often get stuck in the traffic jams. This can delay their arrival to the scene of an emergency.

Solutions:

There are several solutions that have been suggested to ease the traffic congestion in Dhaka. These include increasing the number of buses and rickshaws, widening the roads , providing more parking space for vehicles and increasing road safety. Public transport is the most effective solution to alleviate traffic congestion in Dhaka.
