About a month ago I published an article promoting vertical gardening as a means to combat climate change and end global hunger. Today, I am proud to announce the update of our vertical garden.

It all began as our organization's Earth Day activity to support the Earth Day Celebration. Our little lettuce seedlings finally sprout and are ready for re-potting and so are we ready get our hands dirty. We drop everything we do, head to our vertical garden and in all excitement we begin filling the pots with soil while others are carefully transferring the little lettuce from the seedling tray to the pots.

The lettuce seedlings should be carefully transplanted to avoid breaking the stem.

So why do we choose lettuce over other plants? We all agree that lettuce is one of our favorite leafy greens. Lettuce grows quickly and can be kept planted over a long period of time and still producing abundant leaves to consume. Also, lettuce are not really that demanding of special treatment as long as they are sufficiently watered they will thrive and most of all they are very ideal for small spaces because they grow great in a container.

Is spending time and effort worth it in planting these seedlings? If you ask me I will definitely answer a big YES. There is nothing like biting into a freshly picked, crisp lettuce leaves.

Lettuce and all other vegetables when harvested fresh tends to have more natural flavors and usually do not need additives such as salt or oil to taste. You have the option to avoid chemicals and pesticides when planting your own which could help reduce air pollution and health related issues due to chemicals.

After almost a month of waiting, we believe we deserve to harvest some of the leaves already.

It is such an exciting and special day for all of us because finally we got to taste our own harvest. The raw and freshly picked leaves is already mouthwatering. To make the celebration extra special, we prepared some more ingredients that goes best with these freshly picked leaves.

The feeling is overwhelming seeing the meal we prepared with the vegetable we planted on our own.

We enjoyed the food and the experience and all the dirty jobs that we go through to deserve this day are all worth it.

Friends, we do not really need a big land or gardening experience in order to grow our own food. Great are the rewards of your effort when you start growing your own food.
Let the gardening begin!
