"Slaving away on a 9-5" or "having a job"?

For as long as I remember, I have always seen a lot of scrutiny towards a 9-5 in different circles. Yes, heavy responsibility and discipline can be coined as torture for many. But there have to be people out there that love being dedicated to something, no matter how strenuous or mundane it may seem.

I have thought a lot about having a job and not having one. I have myself delved in a 9-5 and out of it. And each time I found something similar. Do you know what it is? It is that there will always be a person that hates doing a job, while another that loves it, and one more that has no choice other than being indifferent to it.

I find it really amusing and rather selfish for anyone to comment on the choices of a person's life. For one, we have no clue what the person may be going through. Secondly, if the person is doing something out of their own will, why should we be the least bothered with it.

At times I think of my colleague, and how would she react to the hate some people give to those "slaving" away on a 9-5. Yes, many people call that "slaving". Her name is Anna. She is a single mother of 2. She is so much more than a mother to her amazing little 2 kids. She is a mother, a role model, an example, a friend, and a hero.

What else is Anna supposed to do? Run a business, some would say. But the government only gives her so much. She can barely let her children go to a birthday party with 2 gifts. She has to always send the 2 kids with just 1 gift in order to save enough money to give them an ice cream on a Sunday afternoon.

What if she started a business and quit her "slaving" 9-5? Initially, she would have to gather up the capital on the expense of a comfortable life. Then she would have to gamble on getting a successfully running business or else her kids are going to starve. If she doesn't do every single detail correctly, the child services are going to show up on her doorstep and take her lovely kids away.

But there is more than that to her doing a job. Her kids will look up to her someday. They may not understand why their mom isn't able to take them on expensive trips. Or why she can't get them the latest tablet on the market. But someday they will grow up and realize mom was always there to put food on their table and make sure they got an education. Maybe then they will realize Anna, mom, did everything right so that they didn't have to slave away in a 9-5 that they wouldn't be interested in.

Anna is a hero. She never gave up. All for her kids. She kept steadfast and is grinding to make sure that even without her education she holds a job in a respectable institution. Her kids can proudly say "Mom works in there" and not struggle a day for food. That's the difference between people who blatantly hate people doing 9-5s and who don't. They are so blindly deep inside their own lives that they forget that there might be someone who didn't have an educated upbringing or someone who has more hardships than missing out on Netflix, or someone that has 2 kids to raise and not put that time into something else than a job to bring food to the table.

That was my question too and I have realized that a job is a stable money, solid income for work, and people like a routine life. People feel secure as well...

It is easy to criticize others' choices. I respect those who respect others' individuality and freedom.
