I'll start with a quote I made up some years ago after I saw the tremendous inputs my father of blessed memory made in my life before he passed on 16 years ago and also the inputs other people who have assumed fatherly roles make in my life and the society.

Fathers are feathers on which the children fly further and see farther.

Fathers roles in our lives and families can never be over emphasized. Fathers are sources and heros of the family.
Some responsibilities a father includes:
*A Father is the head of the family. A popular quote says

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.

Fathers as the head of the family have the enormous responsibility of taking up the leadership of the family. It's not easy to lead. The other members of the family look up to him to make important decisions, take certain steps and actions for the wellbeing of the family.
*A Father provides for the family. They work daily to ensure that there is food on the table. They provide basic amenities like food, clothing, shelter and other things needed for comfort.
*A Father protects the family. It's in the nature of father's to look out for his family and keep them save from harm's way. He ensures the family is secure.
*A Father provides support and encouragement to his partner and children. The father encourages his family and supports them through his guidance and counsel as they make important life decisions. He support his wife also in making the home.
*A Father is a role model. The children and wife looks up to him to lead exemplary lives. To teach ethics, to correct and instruct and rebuke.
*A Father gives companionship to his wife and children by spending quality time with his family.
*A Father is like a window that opens the kids up to the world. Children learn early in life through their fathers examples and ideologies.
These and many more are the roles father's play in our lives.

As my imagination runs wide and I enjoy the lyrics it brings to me through the images of this contest, I see a father's love. A love so depicted and clearly shown by those images.
John had just been married for a year. He lives happily with his wife and they were expecting their first baby. When Susie broke the news of her pregnancy, it was a happy moment for the husband and wife who loved each other dearly. They were overwhelmed with joy as they made preparations for the new member of the family. Towards Susie's time of delivery, she developed some complications. They tried to check her health but it only deteriorated. On the day of her deliver, she gave birth to this beautiful baby boy. Their joy knew no bounds but Susie didn't live long to share in that new joy. She passed few hours after delivering her baby. It was a moment of mixed feelings for John. He held his bundle of joy in his hands and cried.
He missed his wife so much but was determined to give his son the life he deserves. It wasn't an easy journey on his part but he was able to pull through with the help of the nurses, family and friends. He received counsel on how to nurture a new born baby. He learnt the nitty gritty of child care and was soon doing well. He would be seen feeding his baby, bathing him, changing diapers and the would cuddle his son until he falls asleep on his chest. He was both the father and mother.

As time passed, the baby grew and he was there to watch him take his first baby steps. He watched him fall and rise. He held him, supported him, played with him, taught him. He exuded a father's love.

A love which moved beyond circumstances to reach out to his son. As the years roll by John and his son grew up to become best of friends. Danny did so well in school and is aspirin to be like his father an engineer.

Danny had all the support he needed from his father who was not just his father but his mentor and teacher. He was an image of a young man who was shaped into greatness by a father's love.

Yesterday was father's day celebration in my country Nigeria and I made out time to reach out to the father's around me. They are awesome people and are worth celebrating.
