RAM (Random access memory) is a type of memory, more specifically, it is a type of primary memory. RAM is a volatile type of memory. It means if a process is running on RAM and suddenly power is being off then the data on the RAM will destroy. RAM allows the programmer to read or write data. The program which is executing is called a process and this process is always located on the RAM. Let’s discuss it broadly.

RAM is also called as read/write memory. There are mainly two types of RAM. They are:

  • SRAM (Static ram)
  • DRAM (Dynamic ram)

SRAM (Static ram)

SRAM consists of the flip-flop, by using either transistor or mos. We require 1 flip-flop for each bit. A bit of status will remain the same until we perform the next write operation, or the power supply will switch off.

Advantage of SRAM:

  • Memory is very fast (access time is very less)
  • Doesn’t require refreshing circuit.

Disadvantage of SRAM:

  • It is very costly.
  • Low package density

DRAM (Dynamic ram)

In this type of ram, a data is stored in the form of charge in a capacitor. The capacitor will be charged when the data is 1 and the capacitor will not be charged when the data is 0. The data will not be held by these cells because of the leakage current of the capacitor. So, it is needed to be refreshed of memory cells of DRAM. Here, the same data is read and written after a fixed interval of time.

Advantage of DRAM:

  • Here, costing is very low.
  • Package density is very high here.

Disadvantage of DRAM:

  • Here a refreshing circuit is required to maintain or refreshed charge on the capacitor, after every few milliseconds.
    SDRAM (Synchronous dynamic random-access memory) is a type of DRAM where an externally supplied clock signal is used to coordinate the operation. DDR, DDR1, DDR2, DDR3 and DDR4 are the update version of SDRAM. Nowadays, we are mostly using DDR4 ram in our personal computer.

Conclusion

Although there are various types of ram, but mostly we used static ram on our device. On process time, it is used by the processor. It is a type of main memory and the most important type of memory. Every computer device must contain a ram memory.
