Memory is a device used to store data or programs. In our daily life we use memory. Without memory we might not be able to store any data or program. Types of memory are:

  • Primary memory
  • Storage memory

Primary memory

Primary memory mainly defines those types of memory which are used in times of processing means, it is not used for storing data or information. Different types of primary memory are:

  • Read only memory (ROM)
  • Random access memory (RAM)
  • Flash memory
  • Cache memory

Read only memory (ROM)
The data on this memory can only be read, no writing is allowed. It is used to store permanent programs and it is a nonvolatile type of memory. The types of ROM memory are as follows.

  • Masked ROM
  • PROM (Programmable read only memory)
  • EPROM (Erasable programmable read only memory)
  • EEPROM

Random access memory (RAM)
The ram is also called as read/write memory. It is a volatile type of memory. Programmer can read or write data by using this memory. If any user wants to check the execution of any program, user feeds the program in ram memory and executes it.

It is available in two types:

  • SRAM (Static ram)
  • DRAM (Dynamic ram)

Secondary memory

Storage memory is used for storing data. Those types of memory are nonvolatile. It means that this type of memory can retain stored information even if the power is loss.
Types of secondary memory are:

  • Magnetic disk
  • Floppy disk
  • Hard disk
  • Optical disk

Magnetic disk
It is a flat, circular platter with metallic coating that is rotated under read/write heads and a random-access device and read/write head can be moved to any location on the platter.

Floppy disk
It is a small removable disk that is plastic coated with magnetic recording material. Generally, it is 3.5” in size and can hold 1.44 mb of data.

Hard disk
Hard disk is another form of auxiliary storage. It is, consisting of one or more rigid metal plates coated with a metal oxide material. Personal computers' storage capacity of hard disks ranges from 10 GB to 120 GB.

Optical disk
It stores bit values as variations of light reflection. Types of optical disks are:

  • CD-ROM (read only)
  • CD-R: (record) to a CD
  • CD-RW: can write and erase CD to reuse it (re-writable)
  • DVD (Digital Video Disk)

Conclusion

Among all devices we used in a computer system, memory is an important one. As we work on data, so it must store in some places and memory do the work for us.
