Hello my fellow mates, hope you are doing well in this pandemic situation. I want to thank @zero-to-infinity for providing us wonderful platform to discuss science and technology. I am participating in a contest called the discussion on the wireless network. I will try to share my little knowledge with you. Hope you guys will enjoy it and go through the whole discussion.

Network
First thing first, let's know what is a network? For example, When we use a computer we need to connect to the internet for sharing data. For this reason, we use a router to establish the connection. We also use the internet on our smartphones, tabs, smart TVs. What have we done here is created our own network by connecting different devices through a central access point or router.

From information and technology definition, when we connect 2 or more computers to share resources, files and can perform electronic communication, it is called a network. The connection may be via cable or wireless.

Wireless Network
Nowadays the world is becoming more portable. Conventionally, users need to connect via physical cables. Which drastically reduces users' movement. But wireless network provides us the opportunity to get rid of a physical wire. Now users can move freely wherever they want to.

When computer nodes are connected but no physical wire is used for the connection then it is called wireless network connection. That means we will get all the facilities of the network using a wireless network with the facilities of using no wire. For example, our wifi connection, when we connect to a wifi network that means we are connected to that particular network. Also, we can roam around far from the router and access the network and we don’t have any physical visibility of this network.

Some real-life examples of wireless networks are mobile phone communication, radio broadcasting, Satellite communication, Microwave communication, Bluetooth connection, etc.

Wireless Network History

  • The brand ALOHAnet was developed first professional wireless network at the University of Hawaii back in 1969 and became operational in 1971.

  • The first commercial wireless network was brought by NCR in 1986. It was called as WaveLAN product family.

  • Back in 1973 Ethernet 802.3 was introduced

  • In 1991 we got 2G cell phone network

  • 802.11 Wifi protocol was first released in 1997 June

Wireless Network Working Methodology
Wireless networks use Radio Frequency technology to operate. This frequency is associated with radio wave propagation within the electromagnetic spectrum. When Radio Frequency is supplied to the antenna an electromagnetic field is generated and it spreads all over the spaces.

The core part for any wireless network is named Access point. Its job is to act like a gateway that broadcasts wireless signals sensed and tuned into by computers.

A computer has wireless network adapters which used to connect to the access point and can join any wireless network.

Types of Wireless Networks
Till now we have discussed the basics of wireless network, its history of it and also how it works. Now we will discuss different types of wireless networks.

Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN): In this network, two or more computers are connected in a short distance over wireless network methodology. In this network, they have radio waves with high frequency and an access point. Geographically this network is limited to any lab area, campus, or office. For good and practical example our wifi is this type of wireless network.

Wireless Wide Area Network(WWAN): This is also known as wireless broadband. Geographically this network covers large areas, such as two towns or cities. A good example of this is cell phones. Cell towers transmit radio signals thousands of miles using this network. A wide area network is not for any individual computer but it connects the whole WLAN.

Wireless Metropolitan Area Network(WMAN): This network covers the area of a city. If you compare then it is smaller than WWAN but larger than WLAN. If we look for an example for this network then we can see the ISP(Internet Service Provider) network is this kind of network. Because their network provides service inside a particular city. This network restricts the access of users. Only subscribed users can access it.

Wireless Personal Area Network(WPAN): This network connects devices to relatively small areas. This area is very small within a person’s reach. A good example of this network is the Bluetooth connection.

Advantages for Wireless Network

  • This network has a great contribution to Voice Over Internet because nowadays we can make calls very easily.

  • This network has provided us a huge amount of mobility. Now we can access it from a large area as it doesn’t need any physical connection.

  • It's cheaper relative to the wired network connection. As we don’t need wire anymore. Also, installation is much easier than the wired one.

  • This network can also be secure due to its data encryption technology.

Conclusion
As far I have discussed what is network and wireless network, the history of wireless network, how it works, and also different types of the wireless network. Hope you have enjoyed it and I am been able to deliver the right things to you.

Thanks for reading the whole discussion. If you found anything inconvenient or wrong feel free to raise it. Let's learn together.
