How Refrigerator Works

in Zero to Infinity2 years ago

Hello everyone.
I hope you are all doing fantastic in your lives. Almost all people have a refrigerator at home, and we know the function of a refrigerator. It is used to cool objects or maintain the temperature.

The refrigerator works on a VCR (Vapour Compression Refrigeration) cycle. Before I explain the topic, Let me clear up a few basics.

  • Heat Transfer: Heat always transfers from a high temperature to a low temperature. For example, after a few times of putting hot tea in the room, the temperature will drop because it transfers heat to the atmosphere.
  • Evaporator: When you heat the water, it turns into steam (vapour form) and then you cool it down, the steam turns into liquid. For example, when you place a cold drink bottle in the room, after a few times, you will see water particles on the bottle because the water vapour available in the atmosphere condenses on the bottle. So that's why in summer, people who live nearby coastal areas or rivers feel viscosity in their faces. Because the temperature is high in the summer, the water from the ocean or river heats up and turns into a vapour, which flows with the air and condenses on your face due to the temperature difference.

There are four main components in the VCR cycle:

  1. Compressor
  2. Condensor
  3. Expansion device
  4. Evaporator.

1. Compressor: it compresses the refrigerant (we usually call it "gas" and which is used in the refrigerator). Due to this, the temperature and pressure will increase. The temperature increases, so the refrigerant converts into vapour.
2. Condensor: The high pressure, high-temperature vapour refrigerant from the compressor flows through the condenser and, due to heat transfer, the temperature reduces and the vapour refrigerant is converted into liquid.
3. Expansion valve: The low-temperature, high-pressure liquid refrigerant from the condenser passes through. As a result, the temperature and pressure both fall precipitously.

4. Evaporator: There are two main objects in the evaporator. 1. absorb the heat emitted by the object 2. turn the liquid refrigerant into vapour. So, the low-temperature, low-pressure liquid refrigerant from the expansion valve flow in condensing, so due to heat transfer, it gives it a low temperature to object (meaning inside the refrigerator) and absorbs the object's temperature. The refrigerant then converts into vapour form.

Then the cycle repeat.

I hope you guys like it.
