Building Information Modeling (BIM): A Way to Digitalize the Construction Industry

Asalamalikum!
Hello Steemian's

I hope all the ladies & gentlemen are fine and doing well in their life. Today, I back with exciting technology that is very fruitful to all the engineers, architects, and another field of study, Building Information Modeling (BIM). I will share the basic introduction and overview of the BIM here. So let's start:

Building Information Modeling

Building Information Modeling (BIM), one of the most promising developments in the building industry, is emerging as a cutting-edge method for virtually planning and managing building projects in real-time. The Building Information Modeling (BIM) process creates a digital representation of an asset at each stage of its lifecycle, from planning and design to construction and operation. Digitalization of architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) relies on building information modelling (BIM). A building information model (BIM) refers to the entire process of creating and managing information for constructed assets.

For What BIM is used

During the design, construction, and operations phase, BIM creates and manages data. BIM integrates data from multiple disciplines and creates detailed digital representations for real-time collaboration through an open cloud platform. With BIM, you get greater visibility for your AEC projects, better decision-making, and more environmentally friendly options.

BIM Process

BIM plays a critical role in project success and can be used at every stage of a project’s life cycle. The project life cycle is comprising on 4 phases but it sometime may have 5 phases also.

1: BIM in Planning Phase
A context model can be created using real-world data to help plan projects by providing information about the existing built and natural environments.

source

2: BIM in Designing Phase
This phase involves conceptual design, analysis, detailing, and documentation. Early in the construction process, BIM data can be used for scheduling and logistics.

source

3: BIM in Building Phase
During this stage, BIM standards are followed to begin fabrication. Trades and contractors coordinate the construction logistics of the project to achieve the best schedule and efficiency.

source

4: BIM in Operating Phase Phase
BIM data can be used to operate and maintain finished assets. The use of BIM data for renovation or demolition will be more effective and cost-effective in the future.

Advantages of BIM

BIM provides numerous advantages for the user depending upon which process the user uses the BIM technology. As a civil engineer, I will discuss some of the advantages which BIM provides in the Civil engineering field are:
1: Better Visualization
Visualize your Design and Communicate it better with the help of better visualization tools, it is easier for the nontechnical client to understand the design. Changes can be easily incorporated into the design using clients' feedback, reducing change orders, thereby reducing the overall project cost. More time is spent designing rather than drafting.

source

2: Improved Design Communication
BIM ensures better communication between different stake holders and instead of 2D drawings, information is shared through a BIM model that clearly communicates design intent. This in turn increases client satisfaction.

source
3: Improved Coordination and Clash Detection
When developers create better visualizations during construction, coordinate drawings, and use clash detection tools, they can reduce clashes between multiple elements, leading to increased client dissatisfaction and building delays.

source
4: Greater predictability:
Through BIM, the process of calculating quantity is automated. Furthermore, the costs of different design options can be determined without much effort and in a short period of time. During the course of the project, materials can be tracked as well.

source
5: Better Safety Planning
As a result of BIM, the safety situation of the site can also be improved. The different scenarios that can happen during construction can be simulated so that a proper safety plan can be developed.

Tools to Achieve BIM

As BIM is a technology and it can be achieved from many tools. I would specify some tools which are primarily used in civil engineering projects to achieve BIM, which are:

1: Revit
2: ArchiCAD
3: NavisWorks
4: Tekla BIMsight
5: BIMobject
6: Civil 3D

Conclusion

A groundbreaking innovation, Building Information Modeling (BIM) is changing the world of Architecture-Engineering-Construction. A BIM system is a technology and process. A BIM technology component allows stakeholders to simulate what is to be created in a simulated environment, enabling them to detect any design, construction, or operation difficulties before they begin. Using the process component facilitates collaboration and ensures that all stakeholders are included in the decision-making process.

All the country's GDP mostly depends upon its construction sector. The construction sector is very much behind in implementing the advanced technology due to the reluctance of the involved stakeholders. BIM provide an opportunity to the stakeholders to advance the technique in the construction sector.
I hope all of my fellows like my overview about Building Information Modeling (BIM). There is an excellent opportunity for the researcher to explore this technology in their concerned field as we all know there is always room for improvement and the sky is open, having no limitation.

Adequate safety measures will enhance the working environment and make employees feel more comfortable and confident. Employers who take appropriate steps to guarantee the health and safety of their employees will involuntarily raise their morale and hence increase their productivity. It also minimizes unexpected fatal and non-fatal workplace accidents and the compensation and other costs associated with such events. It is the responsibility of enterprises and manufacturers to educate their employees and give them the necessary health and safety training to enable them to handle things appropriately, even in an emergency.
