Simple introduction about Semiconductor devices-Diode

Hi guys,

I hope you are in good health so that we'll move into the topic. Today I thought to tell few words about the Diode. I know my all friends will know these name for years but I'm going to explain it's basic characteristics in a very simple manner. Let's start our journey from the past.

Late 1950's the most important year to the world because scientist explore the way to replace vacuum tubes by using semiconductor devices. So that electronic struggle began. Before we discuss further I like to give some small introduction about the "Semiconductors"......

What is semiconductor?

Here I'm planning to give the general Idea so that I don't go deep into the chemistry subject and I will explain this concept in very ordinary way therefore everyone will understand. In our primary classes we remember, lessons about the periodic table , in that IV column we can find the intrinsic semiconductor materials.. Now we will consider about the specialty of these materials. By look at the chemistry of the materials we can find they all have 4 electrons in their valance shell. So that they exist in between conductors and insulators..

The basic Diode

By the basic concepts we know how to make extrinsic semiconductors via the intrinsic semiconductors, anyhow the simple concept is adding impurities or doping method. From this method we can make two types of semiconductors; that means if we add trivalent impurity to semiconducting material then it will form positive or p-type semiconductor or and the other hand we can add pentavalent impurity to the semiconductor material then it will form negative or n-type semiconductor. The story is no any importance of these two types when we consider individually, in case of that scientist found the diode... They joined these two types together then PN junction was formed.. This new device is called as diode..

The above image will explain every basic characteristic in diode so that I will explain you the simple concepts from the image. First we can identify three stages of biasing of a diode that means it tells about the tendency about the diode.

  • Unbiased condition
  • Forward biased condition
  • Reverse biased condition

Unbiased condition means no any supply is given to the diode, then forward biased condition means the power supply is connected its positive to the positive side of the diode and the negative probe of the power supply is connected with the negative side of the diode and finally reverse biased condition means the opposite condition of forward biased connection. I think no need to repeat how to connect reversely because my friends are intelligent.

Symbols and the other simple things are written on the image so that I'm not going to explain these simple thing again and again. Anyway thank you everyone for being with me.. See you from another article.
