Hope you all are doing good?? The earth we live in now and everything in it is all about science. Science has ventured into every part of this earth from the ocean we know and love to the other parts of the earth. Earth science is a broad topic which involves many areas of study like I said, so I will be talking about what earth science is, the main branches of earth science and some merit of they pose to the earth as well as the individuals living in the earth.

What is earth science???

Earth science is basically pertained as the study of the earth’s structure, processes and properties and the evolution of biotic lives. The knowledge gained from the study of these structures and processes are used to help the society to cope with the environment. The knowledge gained, also helps us predict the occurrence of natural disasters and their intensities like now that we are able to predict the time interval between some of the major and disastrous volcanic eruptions, and also the prediction of when storms are going to hit places and how hard it is going to be, and also, same with snow, when we are able to predict when it will come and how hard. All the are all because of the study of earth science.

So earth science was divided into many branches all focusing on one main part of the earth to be able to make detailed and major discoveries in relation to the processes and structure of the earth. The aim of the branches is to understand the make up of this earth and everything in it. Another main reason for the study of the make up of the earth is to be able to find solution to some earthly nature problems, like the disruption of the Ozone layer. If science studies the chemical make up and combination of the ozone layer, then supplementary gases could be synthesised to strengthen the ozone layer and prevent direct sunrays from hitting the earth’s surface. I will be sharing some light on some of the branches of earth science.

Geology

This is a branch of earth science that strictly deals with the study and research into the structure of the earth’s solid materials and the processes that created them. Geology alone is also a broad to pic to be studied and talked about so just like earth science, geology also have been divided into a few branches of it’s own. Those fields consists of mineralogists, planetary geologists, seismologists, and palaeontologist.
The mineralogists is a person who indulges in the study of the structure and composition of minerals and the value they have. A planetary geologist is also a person who also indulges in the study of other planets. As we know that the solar system consist of more than one planet is all due to planetology. A seismologists is also a person who studied earthquakes and everything involved in them, that is their make up processes, structure etc. A palaeontologist are also people that are into the study of fossils around the earth.

A clear example of a field of geology, is a geologist studying rocks, due to the study of these rock we now know how they are formed, how they are formed and which parts of the earth surface you can find which type of rocks you want.

Oceanography

This branch of earth science also has to do with the study of waterbodies and its movements and and everything in those waterbodies. The oceans and waterbodies covers over 70% of the whole earth’s surface. This branch also as can be realised is also a huge part to discover as a whole, so it has also been divided into branches, where we have the physical oceanographers and the marine geologists. The physical oceanographers deals more into the study of the movements of the ocean like the waves, tides and currents. The marine geologists are also into the study of the ocean rocks and the processes of the ocean basins.

Astronomy

This branch of earth science involves the study of outer space and other lives beyond earth. Astronomers are the people who study astronomy, usually astronomers’ uses telescopes to have a view of things that are far beyond what the human eye can even hope to see. They also travel to outside the outskirts of this earth in hope of discovering other life forms and habitable planetary systems. An example would be the NASA mars project of verifying if planet mars is habitable.

Meteorology

This is the fourth branch of earth science, it involve the study of weather patterns, tornadoes and hurricanes through the use of some of the modern technologies like satellites. Many lives of have been saved by because of the accurate prediction of the weather patterns and the intensity of the disasters it come with. Climatology also falls under meteorology as it also involves the study of the atmosphere as a whole over a long period of time. Climatology, has been able to help us understand how and why there is climate changes and how to cure that problem. An example is the study that the reason for climate change is the amount of carbon dioxide which is being released into the atmosphere so this means that if we are able to mitigate the amount of carbon dioxide we release into the atmosphere.

Earth science is a whole field on it own to be studied and I believe with time, wonders are going to be discovered. Earth science has in one way or the other saved us a lot and I think that we can better sustain the earth when we know more about it. Thanks for reading through🙏.
