It is an aquatic plant of the Pontederiaceae family. It has bulbs with air that allow it to float and produces purple flowers.
It is native to the fresh waters of the warm regions of South America, in the Amazon basins, and of the Plata. The rivers, lakes and ponds are distributed. Its abundance drastically changes the conditions of wetlands.
It is used as a medicinal plant, soil fertilizer and decorative. Currently it has colonized almost all the continents where it becomes an invasive species. It is included in the list of the 100 most harmful invasive alien species in the world. "Source
