The story is very simple. The protagonist of the story, the Andalusian shepherd boy named Santiago, often dreams that a little boy will tell him to look for treasures hidden under the Egyptian pyramids. Santiago wants to know the interpretation of the dream from a gypsy. The gypsy tells him to go to Egypt. That should be his goal, he said. A mysterious man who claims to be the king of Salem also tells him to leave for Egypt like a gypsy. Santiago sells his entire flock and arrives in Tangier, where he is robbed and left destitute. He does not have the money to reach Egypt now. After he became frustrated, he worked in a store.
After working for about a year, he saved enough money to do business back home. But at the last moment he did not return to the country and left for Egypt. In the Sahara Desert of Egypt, he meets an Englishman who is looking for an alchemist in al-Faum, from whom he will learn the secrets of alchemy. Santiago's journey to his goal continued, and he met a 200-year-old alchemist.
Did Santiago attain his goal? Did he find the hidden treasure at the bottom of the pyramid? Or did he set a new goal after getting acquainted with the Alchemist? You can know answers of these questions when you finish reading the book.

As I said before, it is a very simple story, and it is written is a very simple style. Coelho is said to be the most inspiring writer in the world. There is a lot of metaphor in this story. Through the story of an ordinary shepherd boy's journey to Egypt, the author wants to convey that people should never be distracted by their own dreams. If you set a goal with a realistic dream in mind, you will reach the goal no matter how dangerous the path is. Even if you want to come back sometimes frustrated, you can't come back, because then "the whole world will conspire" to get you to your goal.
If you set goals and be brave, then no matter what happens, you will reach your goal because of your determination. Another message from the author is that we should not stop dreaming. Because he who can dream can make it come true.

The name of the novel is The Alchemist but not because there is a character of an alchemist here, but the author has also named it like the whole story in a metaphorical sense. If you do not suffer from depression, your life path is very smooth then I would say to read this wonderful inspirational novel. The Alchemist has been sold more than 150 million copies worldwide in different languages.
