MUNSHI ABDUR ROUF

A martyred freedom fighter who participated in the war of independence of Bangladesh. He was one of the seven heroes who were awarded the highest military honor in Bangladesh in recognition of their bravery and outstanding heroism in the great liberation war of Bangladesh. He joined the East Pakistan Rifles on 7 May 1963 and served as a regular infantryman during the war of liberation.
He was martyred by a mortar shell on 20 April 1971 in a confrontation with the Pakistani aggressors at Burighat village in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. He was buried on a tiller at Burighat in Naniyarchar upazila of Rangamati district.
When the war of liberation started in Bangladesh in 1971, Munshi Abdur Rauf actively participated in it. Prior to March 25, 1971, he was serving in the 11th Wing in Chittagong. He was working as Lance Naik of East Pakistan Rifles on the eve of the War of Liberation. He was the No. 1 Machine Gunner in the Medium Machine Gun Department.
After the outbreak of the War of Liberation, he joined the 8th East Bengal Regiment and took charge of the Rangamati Mahalchhari waterway in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. His company was responsible for preventing the movement of Pakistani armed forces through this waterway. The company set up defense bases on both banks of the Chengikhal in the Burighat area.
