Historical Person|| Yaa Asantewaa
Hello friends, I am very happy for this contest, this contest is going to help us know about great historical people in our various countries, regions, or localities.
My entry here is about a very brave woman, she is in the person of the great Yaa Asantewaa.
Yaa Asantewaa
Yaa Asantewaa was born on 17 October, 1840 by Kwaku Ampoma and Ago Po in Besease in the Southern part of Ghana. Yaa Asantewaa was the oldest of the two children. She grew up and became a very brave and courageous woman at that time. She had a brother who was called Afrane Panine, who also became the chief of a nearly community known as Edweso. Yaa Asantewaa was not only brave, but also very industrious, through her hard work, she always cultivated lot's of crops from a land she had in Boankra. Yaa Asantewaa entered a polygamous marriage and she gave birth to a beautiful lady just like herself, with a man from Kumasi.
The Great Yaa Asantewaa
Her brother was the king, and in the time of his rule, Yaa Asantewaa had a vision where he saw impending wars and she saw the Ashanti confidracy going through several attacks and threats from enemies. After the death of his brother, she choose her own grandson to be the Ejisuhene ( meaning King of Ejisu ). As in the time of the British exile, her brother, together with the King, and other members, she became the mobilizer of the Ejisu-Juaben District.
The British governi-general of the then Gold Coast, Frederick Hodgson, requested the Golden Stool which was the greatest symbol of the Asante empire. The Asantes with their own plans, sat for a meeting on how to secure the return of the King whiles thinking of how to bring the Golden Stool. Yaa Asantewaa who was there at the meeting got up and addressed the members who were present, addressing them as cowards. Addressing them as cowards, she took a gun and shot it on air a sign for call of war.
The elders and the king appointed her to be the war-leader in the fight for the Golden Stool which was taken by the British and save from the exile. The war was led by the great Yaa Asantewaa, with the assistance of about 5,000 soldiers.
The Golden Stool
For respect and legendary sake, Prempeh I ensured that the remains of Yaa Asantewaa and others were returned to the Adam kingdom for a proper and befitting burial.
After going through the war, she died in an exile in the Seychelles on 17 October 1921, her grandson, Prempeh I and the remaining who were on the exiled went back the Asante.
The Asante kingdom was officially announced to be free from the British on 6 March 1957, when the Asante zone gained independence as part of Ghana. Ghana was the first country in Sahara Africa to gain independence, all credit goes to Yaa Asantewaa.
