I hope you are all doing fantastic in your lives. In this blog, I'll explain how the car window works?
Have you ever wondered how the car windows go all the way up or down by pressing a button?
The mechanism inside your car window is very smart and compact. The window always moves straight and smoothly.
Have you noticed that you can't press the window down or pull it up manually?

Now, let's understand the mechanism behind the car window.
By a simple crank and gear arrangement, the window goes up and down. It is shown in the below image.
As you can see in the image, the glass is supported by only one single point. Therefore, a small difference in friction causes an imbalance and the window may not move straight.

If we support the glass with two points, it can solve the problem. So, the engineer added two more linkages as shown below.
One linkage is connected in the middle, and the second linkage is connected to the slider. The mechanism we just updated is called the scissor-type mechanism.

The scissor-type mechanism make the mechanism strong. That's why it is used in weight lifting equipment and folding gates. This mechanism was used in cars till the 1990s, and some classic cars still used them. This arrangement has major drawback: it'll make the window fall suddenly at the bottom.
To avoid the issue, they added a spiral spring at the pivot point. This spring unwinds during the upward movement and compresses during the downward movement. This new arrangement reduces the effort needed to raise the window. Show in below image.

The major drawback of the design is that someone has to manually operate the glass window by just pressing or pulling. It is resolved by warm and gear arrangement. The warm can rotate the gear, but the gear can't rotate the warm.
This means only if we input motion to the warm the mechanism will work. The crank is connected to the warm so, the passenger can easily operate the mechanism. If somebody tries to move the glass manually, that motion goes to warm and it doesn't move. Shown as below image.

By simply putting a DC motor on the warm we can convert the manual window to a power window.
