MARY SLESSOR

She was from Scotland, born in 1848, when there was a need for many missionaries in 1873 she decided to join and move to West Africa and reached there in 1876,she was 28 years old,her work included depending and teaching children and was sent to Calabar that is Southern Nigeria.

The killing of twin

This was a common in the country among Ibibio tribe in Nigeria during 19th century. But one woman went to a greater lengths to put an end to this.

She adjusted very well, learned so many things like speaking Efik language and eating the traditional food. She developed interest for wellbeing of women, children and their right which was not considered in Calabar.

They thought when twins born, one is evil and they did not know the one that is,so they have to kill the two children in the bush and the punishment of the mother was dead or banished from the village.

Mary Slessor took it on herself and set a goal and make it her aim to change and put an end to that deadly cultural belief. She became the saviour and protector of those women and twin despite being descouraged by the mission to pick abandoned child and take care of, She did not follow that rule.

She sent out other missionaries to pick those twins in the bush everywhere when they are abandoned and took care of them. She once took a baby girl named her Jennie and sent her to Scotland.

Over her life time she stopped people from taking poison when they are suspects to proof their innocence, saves many twins, helped sick once and heal them, the Paramount is that she stopped the killing of twins and continue in telling about Jesus to people.
