In 1976, during visits to the poor families in the village Jobra near to Chittagong University, Yunus found that little credits could be a lopsided effect to the poor people. Village ladies who made bamboo furniture needed to take loan to purchase bamboo, and reimburse their benefits to the landers. Ordenary banks would not like to make small loans to the poor people because of high interest and high risk. Muhammad Yunus believe that, if they get the opportunity, the poor villagers will return the cash, microcredit was a practical business model.

Yunus lent US$27 of his money to 42 ladies in the village, who made a benefit of BDT 0.50 (US$0.02) each on the profit. Consequently, Yunus is credited with the possibility of microcredit.
