To different people, the term ‘fitness’ means different things but most commonly, it is being able to carry out one’s everyday duties with strength, vigor and at optimal performance with less feeling of fatigue. For a person to be considered physically fit, there are a lot of contributing factors ranging from eating healthy meals to undertaking exercises.


KINDS OF EXERCISES

Exercising is the engagement in bodily activities that increases the heart rate above the normal resting level thereby enhancing physical fitness. Exercising is important in maintaining overall health and wellbeing. Basically, there are two kinds of exercises which are as follows;

  • Aerobic exercise

  • Anaerobic exercise


AEROBIC EXERCISE

Aerobic exercises are exercises that involves movements that increases the heart beat thereby improving oxygen consumption of the body. It is an important part of exercising because it increases stamina and enhances the cardiorespiratory fitness.

Examples of aerobic exercises are;

  • Jogging

  • Walking

  • Swimming

  • Cycling

  • Treadmill training


Anaerobic exercise

Anaerobic exercises are fast, high-intensity movements that are carried out over a short while and do not require the use of oxygen to produce energy. These kind of exercises increases endurance and strength. They are mainly done by bodybuilders to increase their workout intensity. A school of thought says that anaerobic exercises increase the body’s metabolic rate hence aiding in burning calories.

Some examples of anaerobic exercises are;

  • Sprinting

  • Weight lifting

  • Isometric training

  • Interval training


Effects of exercises

Control of blood pressure

Research has it that continually being active and exercising enhances the strength of the heart and the body’s blood pressure. While exercising, the blood pressure is increased and after the activity, it returns to normal which in turn results in a better cardiovascular profile. This reduces the force on the arteries and lowers the blood pressure.

Prevention of cancer

Engaging in physical activities helps in reducing the risk of cancer. Beyond eating healthy meals, health practitioners’ advice people to engage in physical activities (especially those that helps reduce blood pressure and improve cholesterol levels) for at least twenty-five minutes daily. The general public is encouraged to adopt a physical active lifestyle by participating in activities such as swimming, weight lifting, hiking, etc.

Improved immune system

Exercises are said to improve the immune system. It increases the level of macrophages, eosinophils, natural killers’ cells, etc. However, this is dependent on the level of endogenous factors which may include; growth hormones and sex hormones.

Weight control

It is no longer news that exercising has a large range of health-related advantages. Regular exercising helps in regulating the distribution of body fat thereby controlling body weight and preventing obesity.


Conclusion

It is imperative for everyone to be physically fit. Exercises can be categorized into aerobic and anaerobic. There are a whole lot of benefits and some of them are regulating body weight and a good immune system.
