Christmas Festival

Christmas is a festival celebrated annually by Christians all over the world, it is a day set aside to celebrate the birth of Christ Jesus our savior. Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of every December and before the date you would see people going to the market and purchasing foodstuffs for the big celebration and also the Christmas tree -you can’t do without this green beauty for this celebration.

Brief History of Christmas

The December period wasn’t always about Christmas. in Ancient Rome, the romans celebrated two pagan holiday/celebrations in the month of December, the first is called saturnalia-a two week long celebration of Saturn the god of agriculture. And on the 25th of December they celebrated Mithra the sun god. When Christianity became widespread in Europe the priest and clergy decided to pick 25th December as the birthday of Jesus Christ in other to curb the pagan holiday.

The Christmas tree tradition that we Christians add in our celebration stemmed from Northern Europe in the 1500s where we have the germanic pagan tribes decorating evergreen trees in worship of their god.

Christmas wasn’t always celebrated by all Christians because of its pagan origin until around
1800s

How Santa Claus Became part of Christmas Festival.

There is quite the story behind this. Santa Claus was inspired by St. Nicholas a generous man who suffered persecution. He saved three daughters of a man from being sold to slavery because they had no dowry to get married and the father decided to sell them, St. Nicholas then threw a gold coin into their house through the window and it fell into a sock by the fireplace. This made children hang socks by the fireplace in hopes that they would receive gifts. After a while different cultures practiced different versions of St Nicholas where gifts where given to well behaved children. Hence the birth of Santa Claus and the song

Santa Claus is comin' to town
Santa Claus is comin' to town
Santa Claus is comin' to town
He sees you when you're sleeping
He knows when you're awake
He knows if you've been bad or good
So be good for goodness sake

How I celebrate Christmas

With Christmas comes holidays, so almost everyone is at home (almost), I go to the market and purchase foodstuffs including the main course chicken, salad ingredients and drinks. Also I get a mini Christmas tree and lights for decoration. I get Christmas music tape to bring in the Christmas spirit. Family and friends are invited and the celebration begins.
Normally Christmas is for just one day (-the 25th but it is celebrated till the next year).

@estyroberts Nicely researched and written. Christmas is a popular holiday that's enjoyed by millions around the world. What baffles me is not what the day represents but how it even came to represent what it represents. It's like using a nuclear bomb to celebrate peace; using pagan customs and practices to celebrate Christ. You know I used to wonder, Did Jesus ever, in all his 33 years of life celebrate his birth? Would he do so today, if he was here, using pagan customs? Whats the smartest thing to do, follow the trend or stand back and differ? SALIENT Questions, these! Useful guidance 👉HERE
Thanks for writing about this festival. Hope it serves as an eye opener to many faithfuls who may never have given though to the origins of this popular festival.
