Steemit Engagement Challenge / S19W4 - "My city special bites ."

Many decades ago in the year 1969, I had the taste of Chinese Indian food at Peiping on Park Street of Kolkata. At that time it was owned and run by Chinese people. The owner sold the restaurant to Panjabi family and it was again closed down for several years and reopened in 2016. Some of the dishes were Chilli Chicken and Chop Suey,

In the ancient time Chinese came to Kolkata. They were engaged in Leather tannery business. They used to sale food to Chinese people only in China Town of Tagra area. They started preparing Chinese food with local spices like cumins, red chilli, chili flakes to make it very hot and tasty and a new fusion Indian Chinese food was born. The Schezwan and Manchurian types of Chinese food is not available anywhere in the world other than India. Nowadays all types of food like Taiwan, Korean, Italian are available in Kolkata.

I visited the second Chinese restaurant in Kolkata in 70s called New Embassy which also closed two years ago and it was known for authentic food.

In 90s I used to visit a joint called Jim's Kitchen. There chilli prawn is famous. They were located at a offbeat place so they opened their second outlet near New market.

In between I also had Mughlai foods. A Muslim is known by his food. One of the famous dish is biryani which is available with potato only in Kolkata. Wajid Ali Shah who was last Nawab of Awadh exiled to Kolkata by East India Company. He only introduced Mughlai food in Kolkata. There are many restaurants called Royal India, Aminiya, Siraj, Arsenal famous for biriyani. Sabir is also known for chicken rezala and tandoori roti.

Zaranj is the first Afghani restaurant in Kolkata.

There are also many restaurants like Sagar, Ambar who have best chef for North Indian non vegetarian cuisines. One of my favourite starter is fish finger with mayonnaise sauce.

If I don't mention the local street Nepalies and Sikkimis food like momos and dumpling that will be injustice to their flavour of healthy and mouth watering traditional food. Even a start up called Wow momo is serving excellent momos having various chain outlets throughout India.

I have not yet visited a place called DHAMSA (a tribal musical instrument) where recipes of West Bengal tribal foods are prepared and served by tribal people and provide you a real ambiance of tribal village.

Actually Bengali, the local people are fishetarians. There's nothing like home made fish items such as Illish macher paturi, Rui macher kalia, vetki sorshe, chital macher muitha, kagji macher chachari, chingri malikari and many more.

There are pise hotels (where manu was so affordable what could be paid by coins) prepare all fishes and homely items.

South Indian foods are also very popular in Kolkata. Some of the restaurants are Madras Tiffin, Ananda and Mission cafe etc.

One of the most popular vegetarian restaurant run by Iskon called Gobindas serve delicious unlimited thali (plater).

There are several five star hotels also serve continental food in their restaurants.

Sweets of Kolkata is world famous. Kolkata rasogolla and sweet curds is not the last but best desert of India.
